Chapter 244 Big Sis and Onyx

Maya curled up beside the tree trunk and tugged her jacket zipper all the way to the top, but she was still cold.

Everyone else had already found their own spots to lie down.

No one spoke. In the dark, all she could hear was wind rustling through the leaves-then a soft shuffling sound nearby.

Maya snapped her head toward the noise.

By the faint moonlight, a grimy little face came into view. It was the kid called Number 4.

“What do you want?”

“I don’t mean any harm.” His voice was low and slow. “You’re the one I brought back today.”

Maya looked at him for two seconds.

Under the moonlight, the boy’s face was still too dirty for her to make out his real features, but his eyes stood out. He spoke softly, all polite and mild, like a very well-behaved kid.

“So?”

Number 4 crouched down beside her. “Can we stay together? I don’t have a partner.”

Maya refused without a second thought. “No.”

“I don’t need a partner.”

Number 4 didn’t leave right away.

He stayed crouched there for a long while before finally asking, confused, “Why? Everyone has a partner. People can team up here.”

“Then, if everyone has a partner, why are you the only one who doesn’t?”

After Maya threw out that brutal line, she saw his head droop.

She couldn’t help biting her lip. A beat later, it hit her that she kind of looked like she was bullying a little

kid.

“Because I’m pretty useless…” Number 4 spoke again. There was no grievance or self-pity in his voice, only calm honesty. “But you’re not really that amazing either, so can we team up?”

She was speechless.

What the hell did he mean that she wasn’t that amazing either?

Maya forcefully swallowed the urge to argue and cupped her face in her hands, looking serious. “Do you really want to follow me?”

“Mm.”

The boy’s eyes looked wet as he nodded quickly.

He was really scared of being alone.

When he brought her back, it wasn’t only because her sudden appearance felt strange.

There was another reason, too.

She had landed directly on top of him.

So, didn’t that mean she was supposed to be with him?

Holding on to that perfectly reasonable belief, Number 4 finally worked up the courage to come find her.

Maya seriously thought about it for a few seconds too, staring at him.

The boy in front of her had a filthy face too, like a little beggar, but his eyes held none of the cowardice you’d expect from the group punching bag. Instead, they were oddly calm.

“Do you have a name?” she asked.

He shook his head.

Maya folded her arms. “If you want to be partners with me, then you have to call me Big Sis.”

Big Sis?

Number 4 blurted out, “I don’t have an elder sister.”

He was the oldest in his family.

Maya didn’t care. “If you want to roll with me, you call me Big Sis.”

The boy’s wide eyes opened slightly in surprise. He was obviously weighing just how serious this condition

was.

In the end, Number 4 pressed his lips together.

He still chose to submit to Maya’s overwhelming tyranny.

In a childish but clear voice, the boy called out, “Big Sis.”

“Good. Nice. Powerful.” The moment Maya heard that ‘Big Sis, she stopped feeling sleepy, and even her cold didn’t seem quite so miserable anymore.

The little girl sat up straight, rested her chin on her hand, and beamed. “Since you don’t have a name either, I’ll give you one.”

“From now on, you’re called Onyx.”

The name was absolutely perfect.

Number 4 was clearly stunned for two seconds. He repeated it, “Ony

“Yep.” The more Maya talked, the happier she got. She clapped once. “You’re Onyx now.”

“From now on, we’re the best partners ever.”

Number 4 hesitated a little. “Why that name?”

“Look, your hair is black, your eyes are black too, and your face is all dirty.” Maya gave him a careful review. swaying her head lightly like a smug little cat. “I don’t just make names up at random, you know.”

༈ །

He looked in silence at this girl with a bad brain and terrible naming skills. Since he’d already called her Big Sis, there was no point arguing over something like this, so Number 4 gave in again.

He spoke slowly. “Got it.

“So what do we do now?”

Maya didn’t answer right away. She crooked a finger at him, telling him to sit closer.

Number 4 obediently shuffled over until their shoulders were almost touching.

The night wind blew in from the sea, damp and salty, rustling the leaves overhead.

She truly didn’t understand what was going on here.

“Are the rules here really that only the last person alive gets to leave?”

But that wasn’t right.

If this was a trial ground prepared for the Clark children, then the truth behind that sentence was a lie.

In reality, none of them were meant to live.

The only ones who could survive were the children with the last name Clark.

Rules like that weren’t fair at all.

“Yeah,” Number 4 said. “That’s what we’ve always been told. Only the one who survives to the end is the

winner.”

Maya’s fingers tightened lightly around a fallen strand of hair as she kept pressing. “Then, how long are we supposed to stay in this place? When does it end? When can we leave?”

And in the very next second-
