Chapter 25

“Did you see what she did, Kane!? Did you see what she did to me!?” she spurts out, following along with me as I walk to the center of the ballroom, adjusting my tie.
“Obviously I saw,” I tell her with a sigh. “I was fucking there, Bianca.”
“She embarrassed me!” Bianca exclaims. “She’s doing all of this on purpose to ruin my reputation. Your
reputation too!”
“The girl is right, son,” my father says as he comes to my side. “You need to act quickly and nip this entire thing in the bud so this whole fiasco doesn’t spread further.”
Once again, I huff in frustration, dragging a hand over my face.
Evelyn sure turned heads tonight – she’d gone all fucking in. It’d been mistaken before. This wasn’t just her throwing minor tantrums or merely trying to get my attention. She was genuinely determined to
divorce me.
Fuck.
If only I’d taken her more seriously before instead of dismissing her. Maybe Evelyn is capable of more than I’d realized – something that pains me to admit.
My father is right, though. I need to try and minimize the fallout of tonight’s events. I need to get Henri on it and ensure that this doesn’t spread like wild fire.
Pulling out my phone, I go to call my Beta but am unable to get to my call log before my phone suddenly comes alive with a frenzy of notifications.
News articles, YouTube videos, F******k links, emails from stakeholders, and texts from pack members. Every headline, subject line, or summary of the message revolves around Evelyn’s speech tonight, the Luna and Alpha being in hot water.”
I’m too fucking late. The news is already out to the public before I can even play my own hand.
Goddess damnit, Evelyn.
My phone goes off again, but as I look down I don’t find a news article or video link. Instead, it’s a phone
call.
From the Alpha King, himself.
I hesitate for a moment, but I know that it’s inevitable – I have to answer to him. Better now than never.
“King,” I answer as I place the phone to my ear. “To what do I owe the honor?”
“Don’t play coy with me, Kane,” the Alpha King scolds. “You know as well as I do that I’ve already seen the news.”
I clear my throat. “Yes, sir. I’d assume you’d had.”

“Then you likely also assumed that I am not happy, Kane. Not fucking happy,” he informs me. “Need I remind you just how important family harmony is? I thought we agreed you’d leave behind your playboy ways and be a proper husband.”
I pinch the bridge of my nose. “Most of the news was fabricated,” I try. “Evelyn and I are fine. We’re just not well acquainted yet. We haven’t been together that long.”
“If you don’t properly maintain your household, then your request to go to war against the rogues forces will be rejected,” the Alpha King tells me flatly.
“What!?” I bark out. “But I’ve dedicated years to that war. I’ve been eliminating rogue remnants and investigating the soldiers who had gone feral under your orders. All of that work would be wasted.”
With one simple word from the Alpha King, everything I’d worked toward would be for nothing. It would be a loss, especially as I’d been making progress with his investigations lately. Not as much as I’d like since I’d been a little distracted by Evelyn lately, but enough.
“Well, then perhaps use this as a little incentive to be a good husband – yes?” the Alpha King says, amused. “In fact, in order to help you along, I’ll personally come for an appearance at your pack. A special inspection, if you will.”
Oh, fucking hell.
