Chapter 29

“He’s a childhood friend,” I explain, clearing my throat. “Back when my mother was alive…we spent a lot of time together.”

“That we did,” Alexander confirms, still grinning. “I believe our parents often joked about an arranged engagement between us – back in those days.”

That comment makes me laugh, but Kane says nothing from my side. In fact, I swear I see his jaw clench from the corner of my eye.

However, I’m distracted as Alexander’s gaze softens. “I apologize that I wasn’t able to attend your wedding, Evie. I’ve been quite busy.”

With the acknowledgement of my wedding, I can’t help but shift uncomfortably. It was one thing to lie to the Alpha King, but putting up an act in front of Alexander – my childhood friend – felt different.

“Oh, that’s “I begin, waving him off awkwardly.

I’m unable to finish, unsure what to say. However, it seems I don’t have to figure it out as I suddenly feel Kane’s arm wrapping around my waist. He pulls me toward him, enveloping me in his warmth as he

holds me close.

I see Alexander’s eyes slightly widen, knowing mine do the same as I glance over at Kane. Just as I had thought, his jaw is clenched tight, his features tense. If I didn’t know better, I’d think he’s…

Jealous. And the arm wrapped around my waist is his way of claiming his territory.

A ping of annoyance runs through me, but before I can say or do anything, I realize the Alpha King is making his way over to us. Immediately, I try my best to seem at ease in Kane’s embrace.

“What a reunion,” the Alpha King begins, glancing around at our small group. “I had no idea that you knew Kane’s wife, Alexander.”

“Old friends,” Alexander states, looking over to give me a quick wink. Kane tenses at the gesture.

“Evelyn, you are beautiful, aren’t you?” the Alpha King states, expressing his liking as he nods at me with approval. “You look so much like your mother.”

The mention of my mother causes my throat to tighten. I couldn’t help but notice Alexander’s own frown – as if experiencing his own sorrow.

“Don’t you find her beautiful, Kane?” the King asks toward the man at my side. My heart leaps, regarding his question as a challenge – one that I hope Kane can answer believably.

Only, Kane escapes the Alpha King’s question as someone else joins our conversation. It comes as no surprise that it’s Bianca who suddenly steps in, as if perfectly choosing this moment.

“Don’t you find the room to be the real beauty here?” she asks, her tone smooth and sultry. “I designed it myself and had the flowers -”

“Do you make a habit of joining conversations you’re not welcome in?” the Alpha King bites out coldly.” This is a discussion among Alphas, you have no place to speak.”

I have to clench my teeth from letting my jaw fall open and then tighten my stomach so I don’t stumble into a fit of giggles. Seeing the Alpha King completely dismiss Bianca fills me with more glee than I could have ever imagined, especially as she immediately retreats with embarrassment.

“Now,” the Alpha King begins, turning back to us as he seems to cool off. “Where were we?”

“You know,” Alexander speaks up. “I remember when Evie was only ten and used to insist on only wearing the color pink.”

Alexander’s sudden comment makes me laugh. “What? A girl can’t have a favorite color.”

“Of course she can,” he replied with a chuckle. “But you also insisted we call you ‘Princess Evelyn’ and stand whenever you entered the room.”

This story even gets a laugh from the Alpha King.

“Need I remind you that you wanted to be a dog and would spend all of our shared dinners under the table, whining for scrapes?” I fire back at him.

“I am a wolf. That’s basically a dog, isn’t it?” Alexander offers, flashing a dazzling smile.

Enjoying ourselves, Alexander and I continue to reminisce on childhood memories. Meanwhile, Kane stays quiet at my side, seeming as though he can’t find a way to join in. However, he never loosens his hold on my waist.

After a few more stories, the light music in the room grows louder, signaling that it is time for the evening’s first dance. People begin to flock to the dance floor, partnering up.

Seeming to also notice, Alexander’s eyes meet mine.

“Would you like to dance, Evie?” he asks, holding out a hand. “Just like old times?”

Before I even attempt to answer, Kane finally speaks up beside me.

“The only person my wife will be dancing with -” Kane begins.

“- is me.”
