Chapter 38

“I’ve seen what you’re capable of,” he begins. “A lot of wolves could benefit from your ability.”
I blink, trying to make sense of what he means. It almost sounded like…a compliment. At least he was admitting something I could do instead of highlighting my faults.
“So I’d like to officially invite you to participate in the treatment process for feral wolves,” Kane continues.
I almost think it’s a joke, but as I replay Kane’s words I can sense the sincerity in his invitation. After all, while these wolves may be feral, they are still members of his pack.
“What would that entail?” I ask him slowly.
“You’d continue your work with the current doctors, but you don’t have to sneak around to do it,” he informs me. “And you’d be included in other feral cases and studies. We’d explore the boundaries of what your gift can do.”
I nod, thinking over this proposition. Kane gives me a moment as I consider my options.
“Okay,” I say suddenly. “I will agree to help out your pack and the feral wolves, but I have my own terms.”
“Which are…?” Kane asks, hesitant.
“I want more authority, and the freedom and ability to treat my own wolf,” I state. “The stronger she grows, the more I’ll be able to help the feral wolves.”
Kane stares at me for a moment, allowing my words to sink in.
“Is that all?” he asks.
“No,” I reply simply. “And I also want an agreement drawn up that guarantees I receive some sort of compensation once we divorce.”
After my conversation with my father, I was determined to get my mother’s will, but who knew when that was going to happen. Kane and I would only be married a year and if I didn’t receive my mother’s will by then, then I would have nothing.
I expect Kane to maybe push back on this demand, but I’m surprised when he nods.
“Okay,” he says.
“Okay?” I ask, taken aback.
“Yes,” he continues. “As long as this marriage lasts to our agreed time, then you will have all the powers of Luna. And if we divorce, you’ll receive a generous settlement.”
I stare at Kane, silently noting his use of if we divorce rather than when. However, I say nothing, assuming it was a slip of the tongue. A mistaken misuse of wording.
“Okay,” I reply. “I agree.”

I’m exhausted by the time I return to the pack house. Between the afternoon’s commotion with the feral wolves – all thanks to Bianca – and the back and forth I had with Kane, all I want is to relax for a little
while.
Planning on doing just that, I head to my room…or rather the room I share with Kane. However, I’m stopped when someone says my name.
I turn to find one of Kane’s guards.
“The Alpha King has asked that you meet with him,” the guard informs me.
I raise a brow. “Now?”
He nods. “Yes.”
I want to deflate. Being summoned by the Alpha King is an honor, one that I know I should be grateful for. But considering the circumstances…I can’t help but feel anything but.
I don’t want to complain, though. Nor do I dare refuse him. I can summon some energy and put on another show for at least an hour.
Nodding to the guard, I allow him to lead me to where the Alpha King is waiting. He brings me to one of the house’s private rooms and ushers me inside. There, the Alpha King is waiting, sitting in a chair and enjoying a drink.
“Evelyn,” he says my name kindly, but there’s something within his tone that I can’t quite place. As if there’s a secret hiding behind my name and I can’t sort it out.
I try to seem as relaxed as possible as I take a seat in an armchair across from him, my back stiff and straight as I awkwardly settle in.
I’ve only met the Alpha King a handful of times and most of those were when I was a child. My mother had still been alive then and he would stop in to check on how her pack was running. I hardly ever engaged with him and I certainly never talked to him alone.
“Thank
you for meeting with me,” the Alpha King says, giving a nod of approval.
“Of course,” I reply. “To what do I owe the honor?”
