Chapter 50

Kane’s POV

I’m getting ready for the Alpha King’s dinner and I have no idea what to expect. As I continue to work on my tie, I figure anything is possible, especially when it comes to Evelyn.

As I finish with my tie, I grab my black suit jacket from the closet and slide it on. What confuses me even more is that Evelyn hasn’t returned to our room either. She didn’t sleep here and she didn’t come to get ready for dinner.

I question if she’s going to even show up at all. Even though I’m only starting to get to know her, running away and not coming back doesn’t seem like her style. I’ve always seen her rise to the challenge.

But maybe not this time. Maybe it was too soon to task her with something so important. Maybe Bianca had been right-this could have been too much for Evelyn to handle.

I’m weighing every possibility as I finally finish getting ready, preparing myself to head off to dinner. Only, I’m stopped when I hear a knock at my door.

My brow furrows as I consider who it could be.

Despite doubting Evelyn being the one at the door, I still expect to find her on the other side as I pull it open. Instead, one of my guards greets me with a nod.

“Sir, almost everyone is gathered in the dining hall,” he states.

I give a clipped nod, rolling my jaw.

“What about Evelyn?” I ask. “Did you see her there?”

The guard remains stoic, but shakes his head.

“No. No one has seen her, sir. Not in the dining hall or anywhere else.”

Strange. How can she just be nowhere?

And if she had planned the dinner, then why was she not there yet?

My jaw clenches instead, still annoyed by Evelyn’s disappearance. However, I hold my composure as I follow the guard out of my room and to the dining hall. As we arrive, he opens the door for me, revealing the room of already gathered guests.

The people filling the room do not catch my attention, though. Instead, I’m struck by the state of the dining hall. I’ve never seen it like this before.

It’s amazing. I’m shocked by how completely different it looks. Twinkling lights make the normally dark and dusty room look….magical.

There are candles lit and perfectly placed. They bring a wonderful smell to the room, which is partnered with the mouthwatering scent of the finger food set out for guests.

Soft music plays from a violinist in the corner a beautiful woman who plays calmly and with perfect

ease.

The other guests who fill the room are dressed to the nines. They appear to be just as stunned as I am as they take in the decorations and refreshments around them. Wonder and approval fill their expressions.

As I step through the room, people part for me to pass, but I can hear their whispers.

“It’s breathtaking, isn’t it?” one woman says to her friend.

“It really is,” the friend replies. “Do you think Bianca did all this?”

“She must have. She plans every party, after all.”

“Right? I heard she took over after Evelyn ran off.”

“Oh, there she is!”

I glance over, looking toward the women as I notice Bianca making her way through the room. She wears a black, skin tight dress and a set of high heels. Her own eyes flutter across the room, taking in all the

decorations as she purses her lips in slight annoyance.

“Bianca!” one woman calls, capturing Bianca’s attention.

“This banquet is absolutely stunning,” the woman continues. “I can’t believe you were able to pull all of

this off in so little time!”

“I know,” the other woman chimes in. “You are so talented!”

I see Bianca’s shoulders stiffen, but after a second they relax once again. Easily, she laughs.

“Thank you so much,” she says back, happily accepting their praise. “It really wasn’t a big deal.”

“Oh, you’re so humble,” the woman states with a dreamy smile. “You have so much class!”

“It’s all for the Alpha King,” Bianca continues sweetly. “It was a honor to plan everything for him.”

My jaw tightens as I witness her accepting the women’s praise without hesitation. As I continue to watch the scene, I can no longer hold my tongue.

“Bianca did not plan this event,” I state and I watch as Bianca jumps before she swiftly turns to look at me. As our gazes meet, her eyes immediately blow wide. It’s clear she had no idea I was behind her.

“Evelyn planned the banquet this evening,” I continue to declare. “Bianca wasn’t involved at all.”
