“Grandma knew way more than I did. Yvonne and her mother made their move because they were afraid she’d talk. Yvonne’s real father is the head of the White family. He was someone the Xanders can’t afford to mess with. How else do you think they’re so confident about locking down this medical AI contract?”
Chase stumbled back, his legs giving out as he collapsed onto the floor.
“Tracy, don’t worry,” he mumbled. “I won’t let her get away with this. I’ll go there tomorrow and expose her for what she really is. She wants that contract, but she wants to ruin you even more. I won’t let it happen.”
His mind was a mess. The news that Yvonne wasn’t even a Xander had completely broken him.
“It’s no use.” Tracy let out a mocking laugh. “If you actually tried to sabotage their plan, Jared would be the first one to come after you, let alone Yvonne and her people. You wouldn’t be helping me; you’d just be throwing me into the line of fire.”
She had all the evidence she needed to bury them. She didn’t need anyone’s help, but she wasn’t going to tell Chase that. She wanted to watch him panic, to feel the same crushing weight of being helpless and unheard that she had lived with for years. She wanted him to know exactly how much it sucked.
Chase used the wall to pull himself up. “Then what can I do? How do I help you?”
He was desperate to do something, anything to make up for the way he’d treated her. It was all he could think about.
“Do nothing. That’s the biggest help you can give me.”
With that, Tracy slammed the door shut and headed back to bed.
Friday arrived quickly. The contract signing was held in the ballroom of a five-star hotel. To show how much this project mattered, they had invited half the elites in Northport.
The place was packed with media, and word was that the whole thing was being live-streamed. Cameras were everywhere, covering every possible angle, just waiting for the event to start. Groups of executives stood around, talking shop and waiting for the big moment.
When Yvonne walked in on Chandler’s arm, it caused a stir. The CEOs immediately crowded around them, fishing for favors with cheap flattery.
“You look stunning today. Truly the star of the show. I don’t think there’s a woman here who can compete with you.”
“No kidding. Chandler is a lucky man to have someone so talented and beautiful.”
“We’re all looking forward to seeing you take home that contract. Hopefully, we can all win together once the deal is done.”
“I heard you’re a PhD student at Northville University. No wonder you’re so impressive. Chandler really found a gem.”

The praise went straight to Yvonne’s head. She soaked it up, giving them a polished, graceful smile. “The success of our project wouldn’t be possible without all of you. I’m so grateful for your support.”

She realized then that the internet has a short memory. People only care about results; they don’t care how you got them. As long as no one brought up her past, she was in the clear. It was perfect.
Chandler and Yvonne were quickly swept into deep conversations about the project.
When Tracy and Sam walked in, they saw Yvonne, Chandler, and Jared at the center of the room, laughing and talking with the crowd. Those three probably had no idea that instead of a contract, they were heading for a police station.
Sam glanced at Tracy. “You’re the real star today, but Yvonne just loves to try and steal your spotlight. Still, you’re the most beautiful woman here. Trust me on that.”
He shifted his position, blocking her view of the happy trio. He didn’t want anything ruining her mood, whether she still cared about them or not. He acted as a human shield so she wouldn’t have to look at the
trash.
Tracy smiled at him. “Keep talking like that and I’ll start getting a big head. I’m not as great as you make me out to be. As for those people… I stopped caring a long time ago. If they want to show off, let them. It doesn’t
bother me.”
Yvonne spotted Tracy and was surprised for a split second, but a smug smirk quickly replaced it. She figured Tracy had just clawed her way in to witness her moment of glory.
