Chapter 61

Remembering the look on her face causes something to stir in my chest.

A flash of a camera and a laugh stir me from my thoughts, causing me to glance over at the paparazzi still standing beside the table.

“Man, I thought this was just an act,” he tells me. “But you’ve clearly got it bad for her.”

He turns around the camera, showing me the photo he took of me staring after Evelyn.

Got it bad for her? Absolutely fucking not.

Still, he releases another laugh at my expense, causing me to clench my teeth. Slowly, I stand up from my chair, tossing down money to cover the bill. Then I approach the paparazzi.

“It is just an act,” I say, a threat in my words. This time my wolf laughs mockingly inside of me and I dismiss him

too.

I pull out a few more bills, staring at them as the money feels dirty after Evelyn’s reaction. But I still hand it over to the paparazzi because I meant what I said. This was for survival – for both Evelyn and my sake.

Aren’t you going after her? My wolf growls. We drove her here!

Shit. I’d completely forgotten about that, causing me to immediately head for the exit. However, once I’m out the front doors, I see Evelyn standing at the curb, her eyes focused down on her phone.

The valet attendant spots me then, perking up. “We’ll bring your car around immediately, sir!” As he runs off, Evelyn turns to look at me, a sneer obvious on her face.

Before I can say anything, she turns away and begins to walk off. It’s easy to catch up with her and I grab her shoulder, stopping her.

“Where are you going?” I ask her.

“Walking home,” she tells me, irritated.

“What?” I ask.

“There are no Ubers available so I’m going to walk,” she informs.

“What the hell are you talking about?” I ask her. “I’m driving you home.”

“No, you’re not,” she states, “I don’t want you to drive me home. I don’t want to be in the same car as you.” Her words are like ice despite how low she keeps her tone.

“You’re being unreasonable,” I reply, just as the attendant pulls my car up.

“Oh, I’m being unreasonable?” Evelyn says with a scoff. “You’re the one who just made me look like an idiot in there, Kane.”

“We can talk about that later,” I tell her, noting how cold it’s become outside and the goosebumps that appear across her skin from the wind. “Just get in the damn car.”

“Not. Going. To. Happen,” she clips out at me, swiveling around once more as she walks off.

Fuck, she’s headstrong.

If she’s not going to come willingly then I’ll have to take matters into my own hands.

Walking after her, I waste no time as I easily pick her up and put her over my shoulder.

“Kane!” she calls out. “What the fuck?”

I ignore her and the way she tries to wiggle out of my grasp as I walk back to the car. I pay the attendant, making sure to give him triple the necessary amount in order to earn his silence. Then I put Evelyn in the car and shut her inside.

“Are you fucking serious?” she asks me as I slide in, watching as she fails to open her locked door. “You’re treating me like a child.”

“Because you’re acting like a child,” I fire back at her as I drive away from the restaurant. “Yell at me all the fuck you want. We’ve got the whole drive home.”

Instead of taking up my offer, Evelyn seems to decide she’d rather spite me by staying silent and simply fuming from the passenger seat. I’d laugh if I didn’t think she’d jump across the seat to strangle me.

After a tense drive, we finally pull up to the pack house and I unlock Evelyn’s door. She immediately jumps out and storms toward the house. Meanwhile, I take my time following her, giving her a little space as I head inside.

As I reach our shared bedroom, I pause as I watch Evelyn emptying all of her clothes from the closet.

“What are you doing?” I ask her, shutting the bedroom door behind me.

“What does it look like I’m doing?” she says, throwing all of her stuff into a bag. “I’m packing and going back to my old room.”
