Chapter 62
“Evelyn, is this really necessary?” I ask her with a sigh.

Evelyn stops packing for a moment, glaring at me. “Was it really necessary for you to use me as a pawn in your little game tonight? You could have told me what you were planning and we could have pulled it off together. But instead you used it as another way to humiliate me.”
She storms off again, getting her things from the bathroom before she comes back. She tosses everything in with her clothes.
“Now that the Alpha King is gone, there’s no reason for us to stay in the same room,” she insists, zipping up her bag. “So I’m going back to my old room.”
“He still has spies here,” I tell her. “They could notice we’re sleeping separately.”
“Then let them,” Evelyn states firmly, staring at me. “They can tell the Alpha King. I don’t care. All I care about right now is getting away from you.”
With that, Evelyn slides the strap of her bag over her shoulder and begins to head toward the door. However, I take her wrist, stopping her.
“I didn’t mean to humiliate you,” I tell her, my voice serious but not intense. It’s the truth and I know Evelyn believes me as her stare slowly raises up to meet mine.
However, she still pulls her arm out of my grasp.
“Goodnight, Kane,” she presses and then she’s out the door.
As the door slams shut behind her, a sigh passes through my lips and I can’t help but begin to pace. Fuck – she’s pissed at me. Again, I hadn’t expected this type of reaction nor had I intended for it to happen.
I don’t know why I care. I’ve made her angry plenty of times so what the fuck does it matter?
I keep asking myself that as my irritation only seems to grow, my hands dragging through my hair as I begin to feel restless. What the fuck is going on?
As I continue to pace, the bedroom door opens again and my gaze snaps over, expecting Evelyn. However, Bianca stands in the doorway, anger clear across her face.
“What the hell is this?” she demands, walking up to me. She then shoves her phone up to my face, showing me the photo of Evelyn and I “kissing,” and a headline that reads, “Fated Mates on a Heated Date!”
“You kissed her!?” Bianca questions. “I thought you didn’t even like her! You can’t do this, Kane. She’s bad for the pack!”
Again, I rub a hand over my face, feeling like I’m practically buzzing as Bianca’s voice gnaws at me.
“We didn’t actually kiss,” I try. “The photo just makes it look like we did.”
“But that doesn’t matter!” Bianca insists. “Do you know what people are going to say?”
“Bianca, I don’t have time for this right now,” I tell her, pacing again. “Just go.”
“You have to tell everyone! People are going to think that I’m-”
“Bianca, get the fuck out!” I order loudly. Bianca straightens, tears coming into her eyes as she flees the room. Great, now I’ve also fucked that up.

But I care less about Bianca’s tears as I quickly dismiss them. Instead, I still can’t keep still, my body restless as I see Evelyn’s side of the closet empty.
Go after her, my wolf urges. You’re restless because she’s gone.
That’s fucking ridiculous, I tell him. I force myself to sit at the edge of the bed, taking off my suit jacket and tie as they feel constraining.
Her scent is still here, my wolf comments. I shake my head in annoyance, despite smelling it too. It’s everywhere and it’s fucking annoying intoxicating. But that’s just because of my wolf and this stupid mating bond.
That’s it.
That’s all it is.
I’ll have the sheets washed tomorrow, I tell my wolf, heading off to take the shower.
That won’t get rid of it, my wolf insists.
Then I’d have the room deep cleaned, stripped of her scent. I don’t care.
Because this is all just an act.
