Chapter 101

“Alright,” Kane states finally. “Then Evelyn and Alexander will handle the blood drive…”

The meeting comes to an end and I feel like I’ve been in a whirlwind, my head spinning. What the hell just happened?

I’m still trying to gather my wits as everyone else stands and begins to file out. However, I stay behind as I turn my attention to Kane who seems anything but pleased.

“Sorry about that,” I say as the last person leaves the room.

Kane turns to me, his brow lifted in question.

“Alexander,” I clarify. “I’m sure

I clarify. “I’m sure there’s a good reason for all of his questions.”

I don’t like the way the words feel as they leave my tongue. They feel wrong, taste strange. It’s weird…it reminds me of how Kane always protects Bianca.

I shake my head, moving on as Kane remains silent.

“And – I know you probably don’t care to hear this from me – but I think your tactic for the rogue wolves is smart,” I state. “You’re not disrupting the lives of everyone in town and you’re also staying under the radar so the rogue wolves don’t see you coming. It’s for the best.”

Kane continues to say nothing, just listens to my words and stares blankly at me.

Still, I continue. “I know you wish you could do more…but you’re doing more than anyone else. So don’t get dejected by Alexander’s questions.”

Silence surrounds us as Kane stills takes my words in slowly. He holds my gaze, searching my eyes as if he’s looking for something. Maybe a trick or catch.

However, he eventually snaps out of it.

“Thank you,” he says.

That’s all he offers and it’s more than I expected. I let him off the hook as I stand, giving a faint smile as I begin to leave. As I almost reach the door, Kane’s voice stops me.

“You don’t have to help with the blood drive if you don’t want to,” he says.

I turn to look at him. “I want to,” I reply. “I’ve been working with those feral wolves…I know how much they could use that blood.”

Again, Kane slowly soaks in my words.

“Yet again…you’re willing to help the pack despite the fact that they don’t trust you,” he states, as if reminding me. Or maybe himself.

I nod, thinking for a brief second.

“Moments like this tend to make me think of my mother. As a female Alpha, there was a time where she also had to prove herself, but she wasn’t deterred. She rose to the challenge,” I admit to him.

I wait for the ache in my chest, the sadness that usually follows with mentioning my mother. However, this time it does not occur. If anything, the thought makes me smile, lightens my chest.

Telling Kane..it doesn’t seem to hurt so much. And I’m not sure why.

Quickly, I clear my throat, attempting to move on.

“Anyway…,” I try, suddenly recalling something.

“I meant to tell you before -” I begin.

Before I was caught in the middle of an explosion and knocked unconscious.

“I ran into some of my mother’s old friends at the summer celebration and they invited us to a gathering they’re holding next week,” I state. “I was hoping…you’d go with me.”

I expect Kane to take a moment and consider or perhaps try to make a deal with me, present conditions. Only, he surprises me as he nods.

“Of course,” he agrees,

Now, I smile. A real smile.

“Thank you,” I say.
