Chapter 102

Kane’s POV

I watch as Evelyn leaves the room, stare at her back until her white-blonde hair disappears and the door closes behind her.

The room is eerily quiet around me as I stand alone, looking at every seat empty as they remain pointed in my direction as if I’m addressing an invisible audience. However, my gaze falls to the table in front of me, my jaw rolling as I consider the woman who just left.

I think of her words, her strange and sudden decision to offer words of reassurance despite me not asking. Despite this pack not truly being her own.

Despite how awful I’ve been to her.

We’ve been at each other’s throats for weeks, but Evelyn is the one who was thrown into a den of vipers all on her own and has fought her way through. But instead of being cruel and resentful, she somehow now stands at my side and offers encouragement and support.

That’s because she cares. She understands us, supports us, my wolf insists, always choosing to put in his two cents. This is just another reason why we’re mates.

Stop being a hopeless romantic, I reply, trying to shrug off his words. But my efforts are half-hearted. They don’t pack as much of a punch as they usually do.

My wolf seems to notice too.

She understands us, he says again, holding onto his beliefs.

As much as I hate it…maybe I believe it too.

Evelyn’s POV

When Sunday arrives, I am up bright and early to head to the farmer’s market. Alexander suggested that we drive to the market together, seeming plenty eager. However, I made an excuse, saying I had things to do beforehand.

I don’t, but he doesn’t need to know that. Really, I do think it’s better that we don’t drive together. Maybe because I consider Kane’s warning… I don’t think it would technically look good for Alexander and I to spend too much time together.

After all, that’s what Bianca had wanted and she’s clearly not to be trusted. I wouldn’t be surprised if she hired paparazzi to hang around the blood drive today so they can snap a photo of anything that looks suggestive.

I don’t plan on letting that happen. Alexander and I will be staying a good five feet apart at all times.

Once I’m ready, I join my driver out front and we head off to the market. It doesn’t take long to get to the street in town dedicated to the morning’s event, and soon the driver is pulling up to the tent set up for the blood drive itself.

“Evie,” Alexander greets me happily as I step out of the car. As I approach him, he hands me a shirt. “It appears they want us to wear these. I guess they’re meant to draw attention.”

The shirt is red with “Donate to Save a Life” written in white lettering. I hum as I take it, choosing to pull the shirt over my other long sleeve shirt. I then notice some of the nurses also attending our tent, recognizing them from the hospital.

After I greet them warmly, Alexander and I are then given our clipboards and take our position at the edge of the tent where we’ll be able to mingle with the most people passing by. As a group of people comes our way, Alexander falls quiet, not eager to say anything while I step up to the plate.

“Hi folks,” I begin, catching the attention of the middle-aged woman closest to me. “Would you be interested in donating blood to help the feral wolves currently being cared for in our pack hospital? It’ll only take a few minutes, but your contribution could save a life.”

“Oh, dear,” the woman says. “Those poor wolves. Of course I’d love to help. Girls?”

The woman then turns to the other four women standing behind her, all of whom nod in unison, ready to help as well.

“Thank you so much,” I say with open gratitude. “You’ll just need to sign a few forms.”

As the women get started on their paperwork, I manage to catch the attention of three men going by. I compliment one of their band shirts, earning me brownie points before I give them a similar sales pitch. After a few smiles, they also agree to help.

“You’re good at this, Evie,” Alexander says as we get yet another group of people to sign up. “You sure know how to charm a crowd.”
