Chapter 109
Kane’s POV
With Evelyn back home, I was able to return to my work with little issue. Of course, that was after I overheard a slew of staff members chatting away about Evelyn and Alexander’s impressive work today at the blood drive.
Those ongoing comments about how right they seem for each other hadn’t gotten under my skin. Nope. Not at all.
The angry grip I kept on my pen never let up. Somehow, I managed to get through the rest of the paperwork without making a single mistake-considering all of the thoughts that were flying through my mind, that alone was impressive.
I had to ignore what the hell was being said about Evelyn and the prince. None of that mattered.
Having gotten through the work I needed to, what I really needed to focus on was this new plan Evelyn and I had discussed earlier.
While I may have led on that this plan of hers was going to be easy, I was beginning to feel a slight sense of doubt on my part. It didn’t have so much to do with her but rather me.
For anyone who knew me well enough, I wasn’t someone who showed my emotions freely. All of my intimate affairs have always been kept behind closed doors, although word always seemed to get around.
But I never allowed it to cloud my judgment. I always put the matters and problems of the pack first.
‘Yeah, but why can’t we also place Evelyn in that same category?’ my wolf questioned.
A sudden knock at the door drew my attention. I was half-anticipating it to be Evelyn. But not. Bianca stepped into the room with her usual sway and red-painted lips.
“Hello,” she cooed sweetly.
“What is it, Bianca?”
She batted her eyes and tilted her head to the side. “I thought you could use some company. You know it’s not healthy being cooped up inside this room all day.”
I was used to Bianca’s games. Part of her charm was finding ways to distract me from the never-ending problems that landed on my desk. But that was back then.
In these last several weeks, I lost whatever interest I initially had in her. It faded the moment Evelyn really made her presence known amongst the pack.
“I’m afraid I have little choice in the matter,” I told her. “As it happens, someone needs to handle all of this work and that ‘someone’ is me.”
Bianca giggled as she sauntered closer, putting my nerves slightly on edge. She pouted her lip and hummed.
“In that case, why don’t I help relieve some of that tension that I know has been building up in you?”
“I don’t think that’s necessary.”
She rested her hand on my forearm. “Well, I heard through the grapevine that Evelyn made the rather bold move to kiss you after she and Alexander returned.” There was no mistaking the bitterness in her tone. “Naturally, I denied such a thing because you would never lower standards for someone like-”
“Be very careful how you finish that statement, Bianca,” I warned.

Her eyes flickered with surprise.
“It’s none of your concern what goes on between Evelyn and me. And to put those stupid rumors to rest, yes. Evelyn did kiss me,” I confirmed evenly.
Bianca paused her ministrations and raised a single brow. All playfulness from her voice vanished.
“You know I refuse to believe that there’s anything truly real going on between you. Marriage or not. Deep down, you know that she’s nothing but bad luck to the pack.”
“Oh, really? Because, as far as I was made aware, the blood drive is going to be a huge success thanks to her hard work,” I noted.
“Perhaps that’s only because of her sparkingly chemistry with Alex,” she pointed out. “I heard the two were utterly dynamic together today. In fact, I’d say they were appearing rather ‘close’ this morning.”
I narrowed my eyes and fought back the urge to clench my jaw.
I was aware enough of the so-called ‘chemistry’ between Evelyn and Alexander. It was a connection that was undoubtedly stronger than the one between her and me. A bitter truth that neither of us could deny.
Yet, the very thought of it felt like an irritating buzzing in the back of my head.
Bianca slithered closer too close. “So, you see? I know that the two of you aren’t actually together,” she urged. Like I said before, why don’t you let me help relieve some of your pent-up tension? Hm?”
Her overly floral scent hit my senses in the most unpleasant way. Just as I was about to tell her to step back, the door swung open.
Evelyn came storming in with a fierce look streaked across her face.
I instantly stood up from my chair the moment I noticed the shell-shocked look on her face. What had happened?
“And here I thought you’d be hanging around with Alex all day,” Bianca insisted.
A vicious snarl erupted from Evelyn’s chest. A warning.
“Biance, you should leave. Now,” I said calmly.
Evelyn’s POV
I couldn’t believe it. Well, actually, I could, Goddamn Bianca. I knew that she would be the one to persistently ruin whatever plan we’d try and put into place.
The thing was, I had grown almost used to her chaos. Her ridiculous and exhausting attempts were nothing I couldn’t handle.
My anger was directed solely at Kane.
Why couldn’t he see how big a risk Bianca was to our plans? Why couldn’t he simply tell her to leave him alone?
For God’s sake, I was surely convinced that the main reason why Bianca was so convinced that Kane and I weren’t a real couple was that he was never reinforcing the matter.
Did nothing we spoke out previously register in his mind at all? Weren’t we supposed to try and make our relationship look more legitimate? Yet, there he was. Allowing Bianca to practically climb into his shirt.
“Evelyn-”

“Just stop,” I hissed at him. “I don’t want to hear anything you have to say.
“Nothing happened,” he said.
I let out a dry laugh and slowly shook my head.
“You don’t believe me.” It didn’t come out as a question, but more of a clear observation. “You really have so little trust in me. I’ll say it again. Nothing happened when Bianca was here.”
The corner of my mouth pulled into a sneer. “Tell me this then. If I hadn’t burst through that door and interrupted the two of you, would something have actually happened?”
Kane’s eyes grew wide with anger. “I can’t believe you’re seriously accusing me of this,” he bit out. “I haven’t been with anyone in fucking months. Can you say the same?”
I nearly reeled back from hearing his outrageous question. “What?!”
“Why do I always have this inescapable feeling that there’s more going on between you and that damn prince?” he prompted venomously.
“Oh my Gods! You’re not seriously insinuating that I have slept with Alexander,” I said incredulously. “You know that I haven’t slept with anyone!”
Kane brutally shrugged his shoulders and sneered. “Well, while he’s still around, I’m sure it’s bound to happen any day at this point.”
