Chapter 119
I raised my brows. “You’re talking about Kane.”
Brooke gently shrugged. “We’re just not quite seeing the real connection between the two of you.”
“We’re aware of his reputation as an Alpha, sure. But when it comes down to how he treats you as your husband, there should be a completely different story at play.”
I tried to hide my panicked expression. It was true. Kane and I’s relationship never really started off as conventional. What began as an arranged marriage shifted into one of contractual agreement.
We didn’t come together out of mutual attraction or feelings for each other. Not in the slightest. But rather a mutual understanding given our current situations.
He needed me to fill the role as his Luna to appease the Alpha King, and I needed him to help me stay clear of my own family while establishing my own wolf.
Emotions were never involved. And now? I wasn’t entirely sure what was happening now.
I could feel everyone’s eyes on me, patiently waiting for some crumb of an explanation.
“I…Kane… Our relationship has always been a bit complicated,” I confessed. “It’s true that our marriage was arranged by the Alpha King. And, it was unfortunate that Kane and I weren’t able to formally meet prior to the wedding.”
“I heard through another close acquaintance of mine that Kane was every bit of a womanizer when he was younger,” Rachel remarked.
“I can assure you that is no longer the case,” I said. “He spends the majority of the time focusing on diminishing the rogue issue in the area.”
“And I’d like to think that he spends the remainder of his time with you,” Victoria acknowledged pointedly.
I sank lower into my seat, wanting the couch to magically swallow me whole. “Well, the two of us have been busy with our own endeavors around the pack.”
Cheryl placed her empty glass down on the table in front of us. “You see, that’s what I mean. The two of you don’t seem to blend together. You might work well together, sure. But you should feel genuinely connected to your husband. Emotionally and physically.”
“Based on what we gathered during the Midsummer Festival, Kane only seemed to stand at your side out of obligation, rather than interest.”
“He seemed to be more attached to that Bianca girl,” Brooke said snidely. “Such shameless behavior.”
“Kane might seem cold and detached at times. I’m not going to lie, when I first joined his pack, it wasn’t easy. At times, it still isn’t. But I feel like he and I are slowly on a path that could grow into something strong and real,” I told them.
It was a little wild to think that I was actually defending the same man I’d been pissed off at not even three days
ago.
Marshall suddenly appeared in the doorway. “Madame, a call has come through. It’s for Ms. Evelyn.”
My brows lifted in question. I placed my glass down and followed Marshall out, where he directed me to the phone. I picked up the receiver and held it to my ear.

“Hello? This is Evelyn.”

There was no mistaking the rough tone of Kane’s voice on the other end. “Evelyn. Word has just come in that there’s been another rogue attack. It’s not like the others in the past. This particular group seems to be moving around and at a fast rate. They may be heading in your direction.”
My heart hammered in my chest. “Oh, Gods,” I whispered. “What do you want me to do?”
“Nothing. You’re to stay exactly where you are. I’m coming to get you,” he ordered.
