Chapter 131

Kane briskly threw out the orders to have the rogue re-medicated; meanwhile, I managed to get Josie back on her feet. I could feel the heavy weight of his eyes on me the whole time. No doubt, he was looking for a better explanation.

“Evelyn.”

“Kane, please. Let me treat Josie first, and then I can explain what I witnessed,” I told him.

Looking slightly taken aback, Kane hadn’t pressed for any further information but merely followed the two of us into one of the offices. I sat Josie down and grabbed one of the smaller first-aid kits.

“Josie, I need you to lower your hand,” I informed her again.

This time, she slowly dropped her bloodied hand from her face to reveal a mean set of claw marks stretching from her eyebrow all the way down to her chin. My stomach churned, but I kept my hands steady.

I carefully cleaned away the blood and began treating each mark with gentle precision. All the while, Kane was pacing behind me. The air in the room nearly became unbreathable from the amount of simmering tension that came swarming in.

“Kane,” I muttered dryly. This was not exactly the time for an interrogation. Granted, Josie and I weren’t exactly on friendly terms—

“No one had authorization to be in there,” he said tightly before marching out of the room.

He had a point. When I finished applying the medicine to Josie’s wounds, I sat back to give her some breathing room. Once we were alone, I took my chances to find out what was going on.

“Josie, what were you doing in that room?” I asked her.

Josie kept her eyes locked on the floor, refusing to look either one of us in the eye. Her shoulders tensed, and her lower lip began to tremble. It was as though she was struggling to withhold a secret.

“Look, I know you and I never really got along since I first arrived,” I began. “But I take it that a lot of that was Bianca’s influence.”

Josie attempted to scowl, which caused her to wince from her injuries. The two of us fell into an awkward state of silence.

“Josie, just be aware, not wanting to speak to me is one thing, but Alpha Kane is the one who’s going to be demanding some real answers,” I informed her.

That bit of reality must have hit the woman like a slap to the face. Josie’s eyes grew wide with panic. Suddenly, the door flew open, causing us both to jump in our seats.

Kane marched back into the room with an expression of burning anger. This time, he had something clutched tightly in his hand. A piece of jewelry.

“We managed to tranquilize the rogue. This, however, was found under one of the patient’s beds,” he stated bitterly.

He held up a long silver chain that contained an amethyst stone surrounded by smaller opal gems. My heart sank into my stomach as an icy chill crept down my spine.

That was no ordinary, random necklace. “Kane…That necklace belonged to my mother,” I said blatantly. “It was

one of the pieces that was in the box Cheryl had given me.”

He raised a single brow. “And?” he pressed.

I narrowed my eyes at his clear accusation. “And the fact is that I’ve never worn a single one of those pieces before. Not to mention, I’ve never worn jewelry while working down here.”

How the hell had one of my mother’s necklaces gotten all the way down here? It wasn’t possible. No one knew that her box even existed, yet someone had obviously discovered it.

And I had a terrible feeling that I knew exactly who it was.

“This was a setup,” I claimed. I turned my head to face Josie. “Am I right?”

Josie, physically shaking in her seat, clenched her eyes shut. “I never wanted to go along with her stupid plan in the first place!”
