Chapter 132

Kane’s POV

Josie looked as if she were on the verge of hyperventilating. She kept fiddling with her hands in her lap, while her eyes shot around the room in panic.

Evelyn remained cool and composed. “Josie, whose plan was it to plant the necklace?”

Josie’s shoulders sank. “…Bianca’s,” she whispered.

My brows pulled together in baffled confusion. I opened my mouth to speak, but not a single word came out.

I fought back the shock of embarrassment over the notion of how quickly I was to try and defend Bianca’s name. I guess I’d been doing it for so long that it had become an innate thing for me to do.

All the while, Evelyn hardly looked fazed by this. That alone left me feeling alarmed.

“Josie, tell us everything that you and Bianca had planned,” I demanded.

“For the record, Alpha, this was not my plan,” she said, shakingly. “I didn’t even want to go through with it. The moment she mentioned the restricted area in the medical ward, I knew it was going to end badly.”

“Is it true that your intention was to plant the necklace to make it look as though Evelyn had been in that room?” I questioned.

She nodded her head. “But why?” Evelyn pressed.

“Bianca explained that it was meant to serve one of two purposes. Either Alpha Kane was meant to think that you had broken your promise to him and proven yourself to be untrustworthy. Or, you would have noticed the necklace was missing and gone to search for it. With any luck, you would have found the planted necklace and had gotten caught in the act yourself.”

“Or a possible third option.” We all turned our heads to find Diana standing in the doorway with her arms crossed over her chest.

“What third option?” I asked her.

“If Evelyn had managed to find the necklace on her own, then there would have been a higher chance of her getting attacked by the feral rogues,” Diana explained coldly.

My eyes grew wide as I felt the lethal awakening of my wolf within my chest. “That’s a very dangerous theory, Diana.”

The woman held up her hands in clear defense. “It’s also a very plausible one, Alpha.”

Josie let out a sharp gasp. “Wait, hold on! Bianca never mentioned that—”

Diana raised a skeptical brow. “Oh, please. Don’t be an idiot, Josie. Even if Bianca may never have said it out loud, there’s no way that the possibility of Evelyn getting attacked hadn’t crossed her mind. In fact, I bet that she was solely counting on it.”

This time, Evelyn lost a bit of her resolve and took a large step back. “Oh, my Goddess.” I heard her take in a shaky breath as she turned several shades paler.

My whole body tensed. I silently glanced down at the necklace clutched in my hand, feeling a wave of guilt wash over me. She was utterly petrified.

I actually wanted to reach out to her and make sure that she was alright. But, somehow, I had a feeling that my presence would not have been too welcome at the moment.

I couldn’t believe how quick I was to assume that Evelyn had broken her promise to me about not treating the newly admitted rogues by herself. The second Diana rushed into my office and told me what had happened, that same spark of anger dared to come back.

It was as though there wasn’t a single doubt in my mind that she had gone back on her word. Absolutely zero trust.

But the longer I thought about it, the less the situation made sense. Evelyn was right. The whole situation reeked of sabotage.

I never once saw her wear jewelry while she was working-let alone wear anything like this in general. What was even stranger was that the necklace belonged to Evelyn’s mother. It was highly unlikely that she would wear it in such a precarious setting with the potential risk of losing it.
