Chapter 147

Kane’s POV

I stayed with Evelyn for nearly the whole duration of the night. And to be honest, it had little to do with Dr. Borsheim’s insistence as a trained medical professional. I wanted to stay by her side.

Even though our conversation had been cut short on account of Evelyn’s exhaustion, it gave me a chance to rehash a lot of what we spoke about.

I kind of thought that I would have felt a lot more vulnerable, having develed into my family’s sordid past regarding their marriages. It wasn’t ever really a topic that was openly discussed amongst each other.

Growing up, I knew that there wasn’t ever really any love lost between my parents, generally because there was never ever to be found in the first place. Their marriage was out of convenience another arrangement to strengthen our pack.

I faintly recalled the few times I tried to ask my parents why I never had any siblings. Their response was always the same. “We only needed one heir.”

Need. A mere necessity.

That’s all their relationship was based on. Yes, it was cold and rather hollow. I never anticipated that my own marriage would be any different from theirs. It was why I placed so much of my time and focus toward my own ambitions.

Evelyn said it herself, I’d never let my top priority slip. I wanted to put an end to the rogues once and for all. When it finally came time to send out my soldiers, I had absolutely zero intention of letting anything get in my way of achieving that goal.

Yet somehow the woman in front of me, lying unconscious to the rest of the world, had put up a stump in my plans. Evelyn started out as that unwanted obligation that I needed to fulfill, and grew to become such a vital part of my life and this pack.

The woman permeated resilience. She’d become a critical asset to this pack, which made the mere thought of losing her utterly unthinkable. And I knew, somewhere deep down in the cracks of my ribcage, that there was more to it than just that.

Evelyn was my mate. If I were to lose her, then I would either become resigned to the unfortunate life of my parents or fall into sheer insanity.

Her words echoed in my head like a broken record. “Why can’t we share in a real relationship?”

As usual, she surprised me. Even with the threat of my enemies potentially using her against me, she didn’t seem concerned. Hell, if I didn’t know any better, I could have sworn Evelyn saw that as a challenge.

I gently shook my head and let out a long breath.

While she was heavily asleep, I instinctively reached out to cart my fingers through her fair blonde hair. She looked so peaceful and unbothered.

I glanced over at the monitor and was glad to see that her vitality had returned to normal. For the moment, I felt relieved. But there was no telling if this sort of thing was bound to happen again.

‘We won’t let it happen again,’ my wolf grumbled.

“You’re right, we won’t.”

Going forward, I was going to make it my personal responsibility to ensure Evelyn’s safety. I’ll be damned if I ever allow her to fall ill and land in some other man’s arms.

The sight of seeing that pompous prince holding her set my blood ablaze.

I carefully removed the IV drip from her arm and lifted Evelyn off the cot. Holding her close to my chest, I brought us back to our room. If Evelyn was to get any proper rest, it was going to be in a real bed.

Once we were back within the sanctity of our room, I brought her over to the bed and tucked her beneath the covers. After a quick work of my clothes, I slid in beside her and curled my arms around her.

For the first time, possibly ever, I felt a true sense of peace within myself.
