Chapter 148
Evelyn’s POV
“You’re not placing me back on bed rest,” I said to Kane with a stern look.
The corner of his eye twitched with simmering irritation. He pressed a hand to his forehead and let out a muffled groan.
“I just knew that you would end up being stubborn about this,” he muttered.
This morning, I woke up feeling ten times better than I had in days. The ache in my chest had dulled tremendously, and the strain in my muscles was nonexistent. I was eager to return with my work in the medical ward; however, Kane refused to let me set one foot on the floor.
“You heard what Dr. Borsheim said last night,” he noted. “You’re to be placed on strict bed rest until further notice.”
I shook my head in refusal. “But there’s no need. Look at me, I’m fine.”
“And I’m pleased that you’re feeling better. But I’m not letting you step back into that medical ward. Not today.”
I threw back my head and huffed. “This is ridiculous.”
Kane turned to leave with the promise to come check on me later in the afternoon. But a serious thought flashed across my mind.
“Wait!” I called out. He stopped and turned his head back at me. “You can’t put the order through to execute the rogues.”
His expression turned contemplative. “Evelyn, they’re literally draining you every time you help them. Can you seriously tell me that it’s worth-”
“Yes!” I told him. “Kane, I’m trying to tell you that there is something going on with these rogues.
His brows drew together. “What do you mean?”
“Do you remember when I told you about that strange mark I found on one of their necks?” He nodded his head. Well, I discovered that more of them possess that same mark.”
Kane went still; his complexion grew pale. “You’re certain?”
“Yes. Look, I know we tried to throw out a few theories before, but I’m seriously beginning to think that there is something going on that we’re not considering. What if these rogues have been injected with something, and that’s what has been causing them to act irrationally?”
He rubbed a hand over the stubble along his jaw. “But injected with what?” he pondered.
“I don’t know,” I told him, feeling deflated, “There’s a whole side to this war that we are unaware of, and if you kill these rogues, we might never get that information we need.”
He clenched his jaw but ultimately ended up agreeing. “Alright, I’ll put the order on hold. For now. In the meantime, you’re not to set one foot into that medical ward. At least, not today.”
Well, I guess that was one way to compromise. “Fine,” I conceded.
Kane looked as though he was fighting back the urge to smile. Before I could question him, he slipped out of the room, leaving me alone with my thoughts.

For a time, I wondered if any of our conversation held any real bearing on our situation. But I suppose that only time would tell.
There were more important things going on than my love life, I thought bashfully.
While I wasn’t keen on wasting the day lying around, my muscles were greatly appreciative of the extra rest. Just before the afternoon, I decided to take a nice, hot shower to break up whatever tension was still lingering.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
I wrapped one of Kane’s robes around myself and went to answer the door. One of the house staff greeted me with a smile.
“I’m sorry to have interrupted your rest, Luna,” they said. “But a call has come through for you, and it seemed important.”
“A call? For me?”
They nodded and handed over the phone. I held up the receiver to my ear. “Hello?”
To my shocking surprise, Cheryl’s voice came booming from the other end.
“Evelyn, what’s this business I hear about you collapsing?”
