Chapter 149

Evelyn’s POV

My eyes grew wide în mild panic. The tone in Cheryl’s voice made me feel like I was a child again. A child who was just caught in the act of doing something they were told not to.

My face grew flush as I steadied my voice. “Hello, Cheryl,” I greeted weakly.

“Normally, I would have sent out a letter. However, I believe this particular situation called for a more swifter form of communication,” the older woman firmly prompted. “Now, I demand an explanation.”

I could easily imagine Cheryl’s current expression. A tight scowl was painted across her face while one of her brows was raised higher than the other.

I bit the inside of my cheek. “Well, I, uh…Wait, how did you find out about something like that?”

“Let’s just say that I have my ways,” she stated.

My brows furrowed. “Let me guess, it was Alexander who reached out and told you.”..

Her tone softened. “Surely, you know that he only has your best interests in mind. And I’m still not convinced I can say the same regarding your so-called ‘husband’.”

I pinched the bridge of my nose while making a mental note to myself to speak to Alexander later.

I couldn’t help but cringe. “First of all, while I appreciate Alexander’s concern, he knows better than to meddle in affairs that have nothing to do with him,” I said. “And as for what happened, yes. I did end up collapsing.”

Cheryl let out a gasp.

“It happened after I finished my shift in the medical ward. I was too drained, and I shouldn’t have tried to push myself into attending dinner. But I did, and I ended up fainting in the hall,” I explained.

“But what were you doing that could have caused you to become so drained? Have you been overworking yourself?”

“Not quite.” I decided against informing her about the terrible chest pains, knowing that she would likely link it back to my mismatched marriage with Kane.

And to be honest, I had no idea where either one of us stood at the moment. So, I figured it was best to just inform Cheryl about my treating the feral rogues. Although I had no doubt she was going to lecture me over that as well.

“Alright, to put it short, I’ve been treating the rogues in our medical ward. I discovered that my abilities are still able to heal them in their feral, comatose state. But the thing is, because of their mindless state, they require a lot more than my abilities are currently able to provide.”

Cheryl mumbled something under her breath about needing to sit down.

“Hold on, before you start panicking. Please note that Kane has ensured that there is always a guard on duty whenever I’m treating these rogues,” I added.

Cheryl took in a deep breath and paused. “Well, granted, I am not entirely pleased with the notion of you placing yourself in such a precarious situation, but it is nice to hear that your husband is at least keeping your overall safety in mind.”

I let out a silent breath of relief. “Truly, it’s my own fault that I fell ill,” I said. “I should have been paying more attention to the signs that my body was giving me. I promise, I’ll be more conscious about it going forward.”

“See that you do,” she hummed. “Now, tell me. Have you had any luck in tracking down that hidden will your mother left behind?”

I sagged back against the headboard of the bed. “Sadly, no. I was really hoping that there would have been something pertaining to it in that box you gave me. But it turned out to be nothing more than some of her old jewelry.”

Cheryl let out another wandering hum. “I’m sorry to hear that. The whole situation is still rather curious, though. As you now know, your mother had a flair for hidden places and illusions.”
