Natalie turned and saw her parents. She moved to meet them immediately, a genuine smile breaking across her face. “Mom, Dad, you’re finally here. I came over with Bryan.”
Lana didn’t have the nerve to cause a scene in front of them, but Natalie knew better. After everything that had happened, she was certain Lana was the source of the rumors. Both the old ones and whatever was circulating tonight. The motive was transparent, she was out to tear Natalie down to make Nina look like the perfect daughter.
Lana stiffened for a second when she saw Natalic’s parents, then immediately smoothed her expression and stepped forward. “You’ve arrived! Please, come inside.”
She prayed they hadn’t caught the tail end of the gossip. If they had heard the others disparaging their daughter, there would have been hell to pay.
As the Sands led Natalie inside, Lana’s demeanor shifted from cold to suffocatingly hospitable. She steered Natalie toward Nina, who was currently center stage, surrounded by a crowd of sycophants.

She played the part of the dutiful daughter perfectly, though she kept a firm grip on Ronald’s arm, an unsubtle claim of ownership.

I heard you just ended things with that man you were with for three years. I actually have someone in mind for you. You should go on a blind date this weekend. Lana hadn’t expected Natalie to steal the spotlight so easily. Seeing the masculine admiration in Ronald’s eyes made her skin crawl with a sense of impending crisis.
