Chapter 153

The three of them shared puzzled looks before collectively shaking their heads. “Nope.”

My brows furrowed. “That’s strange,” I commented. “He doesn’t normally disappear on a whim. At least, not without mentioning anything beforehand.”

Knowing that he wasn’t around felt very off-putting, considering that there were a handful of things that I wanted to talk with him about. Above all else, I wanted to tell him about my new case study.

“We can see if he’s still in his rooms,” one of them offered.

“Maybe he left a note, and no one’s found it yet.”

I nodded my head in agreement. “Please do,” I said. “At the very least, I want to make sure that he’s alright.”

I watched the three maids scurry off to help. My intention was to head back down to continue my shift, but another pack member called out my name.

“Luna Evelyn!”

“Yes?” My eyes dropped to a familiar cream-colored envelope in their hand.

“This just came in for you,” they said.

I graciously accepted it and tore open the seal.

Our dearest Evelyn,

All the ladies and I are glad to hear that you’re feeling better. We understand that you’re in the midst of dealing with a very precarious conflict with these feral rogues. We worry about your safety and would be remiss in our long-standing devotion to your mother if we failed to ensure your safety.

That being said, I want to extend an out-standing invitation for you to join our women’s group this coming August at Brooke’s summer home. It’s located in the Eastern territory, right near the waterfront.

Please say that you’ll at least consider it. If not for your safety, then at least for your physical and mental well-being. I’m sure that husband of yours can spare you.

All our love, Cheryl.

I quickly folded the letter back up and slipped it into my pocket for the time being. I truly wondered if Cheryl and the others would ever come around to accepting Kane…

As the evening rolled around, dinner had come and gone, and before I knew it, I was heading back to the medical ward to resume treating the rogues. I tried my best to ignore the growing worry that pooled in my stomach.

Was I going to feel drained again? If I somehow ended up collapsing yet another time, would that cause Kane and the others to pull the plug on the whole case study?

I hoped not.

timidly entered the medical ward and headed straight for the restricted area. There were two guards on duty who greeted me with a curt nod. One of them left their post to guide me to the room.

As soon as the door opened, I was struck by a shocking scene of Kane already waiting for me in a large, plush chair.

“Well, it took you long enough,” he joked. I was dumbstruck.

“Wh-What are you-”

“Going forward, I am going to be overseeing your work with the rogues,” he stated.

“And the chair?” I inquired.

“Ah, the chair is for the two of us.”

Before I could get another word out, Kane drew me in by my waist and spun me around, only to have me planted on his lap. My entire body went stiff while his arm acted as a seatbelt across my lower stomach.

My heart slammed violently against my rib cage as I felt the heat of his voice against my neck. Hundreds of chills broke out over my skin.

“Why don’t we conduct a little experiment of our own, shall we?” he asked. “Let’s find out if your abilities become drained while you’re treating the rogues, and in the meantime, I will make sure that my hands remain on you the whole time.”
