Chapter 193

Kane’s POV

Thankfully, Henri nodded his head and jumped into action. He gathered up the others and began searching the surrounding area. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a nearby tree that had several large slashes taken out of it.

I reached out my hand; my fingers glided along the slash marks in sheer wonderment.

Holy shit. No normal wolf possessed that kind of ability, I thought to myself.

My initial thought was these marks had been made by one of the feral rogues. However, I could tell that these lacerations were recently made. Based on the freshly ground tree bark that was splitting off from the rest of the tree, only one other conclusion was possible…

“Evelyn,” I whispered.

I recalled her mentioning some of the changes that her wolf was likely to display: enhanced speed, mood swings-but strength? To this extent?

I tried not to let my worries and panic get the better of me. Now wasn’t the time.

But the sounds that kept cutting through the air were doing nothing for my nerves. “Evelyn!” I called out.

Another horrible sound reverberated off the surrounding trees. “Where are you?”

I closed my eyes and tried to focus on the sounds around me. Henri was leading the charge of the others. Their feet hit the ground in continuous rumbles. Evelyn, on the other hand, was moving so swiftly that her feet were hardly hitting the ground.

The wind began to pick up around us, and suddenly I was struck with her scent. My wolf immediately

took the reins and tracked her.

I could hardly believe the amount of speed Evelyn was able to achieve now. Even in her wolf state, she was never this fast. But I was finally able to catch her shadow moving through the trees. She did it with lethal grace.

“Evelyn! Stop!”

She turned her head to glance at her shoulder. For a brief flicker of seconds, my heart stalled. It was as if I were staring back at a complete stranger. Her eyes were pure silver, but they lacked all recognition.

“You need to stop!” My wolf told her. “You’re going to hurt yourself.”

Yet, she kept pressing on. She snarled and hissed, clawing at each tree she passed until she came to a new open clearing in the forest.

I watched her frantically snap her head around, trying to recapture the supposed scent she’d caught before. But she’d lost it. Her features twisted in bubbling rage.

Evelyn raked her claws through her hair and began tearing at the earth in dizzy fury. She roared and growled until the last of her energy had been drained.

I watched her transform back to her human half. Both her hands were torn up, while her clothes were hanging off of her in tattered shreds.

I rushed over to her, carefully taking her form in my hands. “You’re okay,” I crooned.

Her brows pinched together as the corners of her eyes filled with tears. “I had them,” she whimpered.” But they got away.”

Evelyn fell limp in my arms. I gently lifted her up and carried her back to the camp site. I kept her head safely tucked into the crook of my neck.

“Henri, call it off! I have her.”

Henri rounded up the rest of the group, and we all headed back to the cars. I peered over at the beta.” Was that medical tent destroyed?” I questioned.

“Yes, sir.”

“Good,” I huffed. “Let’s head back to the house. I need to bring Evelyn to Dr. Brosheim. I believe she’s just

had a rather large breakthrough.”

I kept Evelyn tucked close to my chest. She wasn’t completely unconscious, but she kept muttering these incoherent sentences under her breath.

“…So c-close…”

“…Almost…Had…”

“…Got…Away…”

All I could do was brush her hair back from her face and continue to hold her close. “Shh,” I hushed. “It’s

alright.”

This poor woman couldn’t catch a break, it seemed like. If she wasn’t working herself to death in the lab, then she was lying out cold from her body giving out on her. On the plus side, I was more than happy to

have her close like this.

It truly pained me to see her in such a wrecked, worn state.

I’ve come to realize that this sort of activity just isn’t good for her. Lord knows that I was going to have a hell of a time trying to set boundaries with her once she was fully coherent again.

I buried my nose in her hair and took in her luscious scent. When we got back to the house, I brought her straight down to the medical offices and called for the doctor to come out as quickly as he could.

Dr. Borsheim wasted no time stepping out of his private cubicle. I placed Evelyn down in one of the chairs while he began closely examining her. He took out a small flashlight and checked her eyes.

“Her pupils are heavily dilated,” he noted.

Evelyn held up her hand to keep the light from burning her eyes. “I’m fine,” she hissed.

Next, he checked her heart rate. “It’s higher than usual, but it’s trying to come back down,” he observed.” Would you mind telling me exactly what happened?”

By the time I finished explaining what had happened to Dr. Borsheim out at the abandoned camp site, Evelyn had fully come back to her senses. Her face pulled into a deep grimace, while the doctor proceeded to jot down several notes.

“Alright, as I said before, I’m fine,” she said sternly. “Can I go now?”

Placing his notepad down, Dr. Borsheim gave her a pointed look. “Evelyn, you must understand that your body and mind are under intense pressures now that you’re changing.”

She folded her arms across her chest and glared at the older man with growing irritation.

“I am fully well aware of what’s happening to me,” she said through clenched teeth. “What I’m also aware of is that the person I was tracking got away.”

I pinched the bridge of my nose. “Evelyn,” I groused. “I know you may not think the same, but I am more concerned about your well-being than some figure you saw hanging around the campsite.”

She shot me a glare.

“I think it may be wise that you refrain from having so much direct involvement when it comes to these sorts of pack matters,” Dr. Borsheim said. “Perhaps it would be better if you were to direct your attention to something less physically exerting.”

Part of me was so grateful that he had been the one to say it first and not me.

“You mean that I should just do what every other ‘proper’ Luna does? Sit around all day and look pretty.” Evelyn snarled.

“That’s not what he’s saying,” I remarked stiffly. “Goddamnit, Evelyn, sit down!”

She shot up from her chair and headed toward the door. Her eyes were already beginning to glow again. Perhaps it would have been for the best that I removed her from this particular area.

I knew that if I didn’t act fast, the medical ward was going to feel the brunt of Evelyn’s shifting moods.

A sudden idea came to mind.

“Alright,” I muttered. I thanked Dr. Borsheim for his time and yanked Evelyn out by the crook of her arm. She tried to break from my hold, but I refused to let her go.

“Where the hell are you dragging me to?!” she questioned.

“Some place where you’re going to let out all of that pent-up anger,” I told her.
