Chapter 56-1

Kiana

Claim

It was another two hours before Troy returned to our room. I hadn’t bothered trying to sleep. I was

too keyed up about the death and sat by the window watching for him. As he and several other

guards walked toward the house, he glanced up at me and our eyes met. I could feel his anger through the bond.

His anger with me.

It was another half an hour before the door opened and he walked in. Fury vibrated from him, but I just kept my spot at the window and watched him calmly. “What did Saul have to say?”

“He says the wounds on her chest were likely fatal. There was enough blood at the scene to indicate she was alive when she was attacked. The problem is that he doesn’t see any defensive wounds or any blood splatter indicating she tried to get away. She just stood there, got attacked, and died,” he growled. “He’ll do an autopsy.”

“So a witch with no connections to any of the wolves just stumbled into your woods leaving no visible trail or scent and let herself be attacked without even trying to fight back?” I mused.

“Highly unlikely. Lunessa should take a look.”

“Except that Lunessa has disappeared. Irene said after their little experiment on Jenson, she headed back out into the woods, and no one has seen or heard from her all night.”

I had to assume that if a witch died in the vicinity, Lunessa knew about it. “You think Lunessa might

have killed her?”

“And made it look like a wolf? It’s possible. What I do know is that nothing points to Morven. Did he say something to you while you two were having your lovely little chat together?”

“Not about the dead body.” I told him everything that Morven said and watched as he paced around the room. “I know you’re pissed that I even let him close…

“Damn right I’m pissed.”

“He was going to find the time to talk to me, Troy! Might as well let him do it when I was literally surrounded by your guards. What was he going to do? Magic me away? Hello. Null here.”

“It doesn’t matter, Kiana,” he snarled. “When I tell you not to do something, you don’t fucking do it. You knew I would be pissed. You couldn’t even meet my eyes when I smelled Morven on you. I could feel your guilt.”

“Yes, I knew you would be mad…”

“But you

did it anyway,” he hissed. “How the fuck am I supposed to protect you if you let the enemy

just waltz up to you?”

“Again, surrounded by a dozen guards.”

Suddenly, he wasn’t across the room anymore. My wrists were in his hands, and he had my back against the wall. “I don’t give a fuck if you’re surrounded by my whole pack. If Bridget can turn, so can any of them. You trust me and no one else, and you show that by doing what I tell you to do.”

Swallowing hard, I stared up at him. “Fine. What do you want me to do?”

“I want you to swear that you’ll never do anything that fucking stupid again.”

“I can’t,” I whispered. “I’m sorry, Troy. I know you want to protect me, but Morven still sees me as my father’s scared and dutiful daughter. I can use that. If he thinks you’re not standing in the way, he could tell me everything.”

“I don’t care” he snarled. Tentatively, I reached up to touch his cheek. “I don’t give a fuck if he promises to admit to everything. You don’t get anywhere near him.”

“What about your pack?”

“What about you, mate?” he roared before he leaned down and kissed me. It was bruising and desperate, and I clung to him as he lifted me up the wall and trapped me with his thighs.
