.Chapter 10-2
“You have to shift, Kane, so I can see and treat your wounds,” I said, kneeling beside his massive
head. “Do you hear me?”
The lycan stared blankly at me, his breathing shallow.
“You stubborn wolf… Shift back!”
Kane growled low in his throat, letting out a huff of air that sounded like a refusal. Then a howl echoed in the distance, and renewed urgency pulsed through my chest. More creatures. Or worse,
Kellan’s people had found us.
“Stay,” I ordered, getting to my feet. “I’ll find someplace we can hide until you’re healed.”
It took me fifteen minutes of frantic searching to find a secluded cave a few meters north of the ambush site. I checked for signs of wildlife, found none, and sprinted back to where I’d left Kane.
He was in the same position, his massive chest barely rising and falling. At least he was still
breathing.
“Come on, we need to move,” I growled, and with all my strength, I started dragging his massive form through the forest. I didn’t know if I could ever do this again, but adrenaline and my wolf’s presence were giving me the strength needed to carry him.
Dragging a lycan the size of a small horse through dense underbrush was not how I’d planned to spend my evening. His legs moved slightly, helping me as much as he could, but it still took several
precious minutes to reach the cave.
By the time we made it inside, I was covered in sweat and my wounds were screaming in protest.
But we were hidden, at least for now.
“Kane, for the love of the Goddess,” I panted, looking down at his still form. “Shift back to human.
I’m going to hide our tracks and find some medicinal herbs to stop the bleeding. When I’m back, I
want you in your human skin. Got it?”
His red eyes met mine briefly, but he didn’t respond. I cursed under my breath and headed back
outside. Every second we stayed here was a risk, but I couldn’t treat his wounds while he was in
lycan form.
He stayed silent, so I cursed and moved quickly. Covering our tracks and gathering firewood wasn’t as difficult as finding a damn plant to use as medicine. Saul, the pack’s healer, had taught me and my brother how to recognize greens that could save our lives if our wolves couldn’t heal

Chapter 10.2
But right now… nothing.
I pushed through the underbrush, checking every plant I could find as I picked up some wood for a fire. My wounds throbbed with each movement, but I ignored it. Kane needed medical attention
more than I did.
“Come on,” I muttered, getting more frustrated by the minute. “There has to be yarrow around here
somewhere.”
The howls in the distance were getting closer, which meant we were running out of time. I was starting to panic when I finally spotted them, tiny white flowers growing in a cluster near a fallen
log.
There!
I jumped on it instantly, tugging up as much as my hands could carry. The familiar bitter scent of the herb filled my nose as I gathered armfuls of the precious plant.
“Please. Please let this be enough,” I thought as I ran back to the cave, my heart pounding with hope and fear in equal measure. In the barest moonlight and with my shifter vision, I sighed in
relief.
A naked man was waiting for me. Completely covered in blood.
