I woke up warm and comfortable, which was weird considering we were sleeping in a cave. There was pressure on my chest, and when I moved my hand to investigate, I touched… hair.
Did Kane have a hairy back? I didn’t think so.
I opened my eyes and got startled. There was a huge beast lying on top of me, red eyes fixated on my face. How long had it been watching me sleep?
“Oh my goddess!” I gasped, scrambling back with my heart in my throat.
The massive lycan just stared right back at me, completely unbothered by my panic. Its head was the size of my torso, and those glowing red eyes held an intelligence that was both familiar and
unnerving.
“Kane?” I asked, confused. “Are you okay?”
The beast whimpered and moved closer to me, which did absolutely nothing to slow my racing pulse. I tried to assess whether Kane’s lycan was about to rip my head off or if this was some kind of weird post-mating behavior.
“Hey…” I said gently, holding my hands up. “Can you shift, big guy?”
The lycan shook its massive head, then flopped beside me dramatically. It nuzzled my cheek and nudged my palm with its snout, acting exactly like a needy puppy despite being the size of a small
car.
I couldn’t help but laugh softly, my fingers automatically moving to brush through the thick black fur. “Aren’t you a gorgeous boy?”
Moon above, I swear the beast….purred.
He didn’t shift back to human form, just hovered near me, pressed as close as possible without
crushing me completely. It was clear he didn’t want to be away from me, not even for a second.
I figured this must be the lycan acting independently. If Kane were conscious and in control, he probably would have shifted by now. This was pure animal instinct, the need to stay close to his mate after claiming her. His lycan must know I was his mate, even if Kane didn’t.
So I stayed like that for twenty solid minutes, petting the oversized beast while he soaked up the attention. It was actually kind of sweet, in a completely surreal way.
Then I heard the crack of bones shifting and reforming.

Chapter 16-1
I glanced down to find Kane fully human and completely naked, lying on top of me, his brow
furrowed in confusion.
“When did we move?” he muttered sleepily.
I let out a hearty laugh. “Your lycan decided to use me as a pillow. Very clingy, that one.”

Getting ready to leave the cave was a completely different experience than it had been the day before. Kane kept touching me, his hand grazing mine as we packed, fingers trailing along my hip as he passed by, a palm at my lower back when he guided me outside.
He looked… well, he looked like a man in love. The intensity in his eyes when he watched me was
almost overwhelming.
“You’re staring,” I pointed out as we started walking.
“Can’t help it,” he said without any shame. “You’re so beautiful.”
I snorted, trying to hide my blush. We walked alongside the river, but the current was rough and wild. The water churned and frothed over rocks, creating a deafening roar that made conversation difficult. I found myself frowning at the churning water, disappointed that we couldn’t wash up properly. After last night, I could definitely use a bath.
“We both smell like sex and cave dust,” I muttered, wrinkling my nose.
“I like how you smell,” Kane said, moving closer so I could hear him over the rushing water. “You
smell like me.”
The satisfied tone in his voice made me roll my eyes, but I couldn’t deny the flutter of pleasure his
words caused. Kane caught my expression, and without a word, he took my hand and guided me
eastward.
“Where are we going?” I asked.
“You’ll see.”
“Mysterious much?” I said, but I followed him willingly, The man had proven he knew these woods better than anyone.
