.Chapter 19-1

Simone

One month later.

I’d been miserable every single day. But lately, I’d been miserable for a very different reason. Namely: morning sickness.

I sighed as I sat on my bathroom floor, my face buried between my knees while my stomach

churned with nausea that had absolutely nothing to do with emotional turmoil and everything to do

with the tiny parasite currently wreaking havoc on my digestive system.

How the hell had I ended up like this?

I was supposed to go to another kingdom, marry the prince, and make sure peace was held

between both sides. Simple political alliance, in and out, everyone wins. Instead, I’d somehow managed to not only remain unmarried, but also get knocked up by my ex-fiancé’s father, who also happened to be my fated mate.

Was, I reminded myself harshly. Was my fated mate.

The rejection had been final, I’d made sure of that. The bond was severed, the connection broken and still painful, and I was free to live my life without being tied to a man who’d clearly been playing some kind of long game I hadn’t understood.

Too bad my traitorous body hadn’t gotten the memo about moving on.

I forced myself to stand up and take a quick shower, letting the hot water wash away the cold

sweat from another bout of morning sickness. The nausea was getting worse, and I was starting

to understand why women in our pack had always looked slightly green around the gills during the

early stages of their pregnancies.

I put on the most comfortable clothes I could find, which were loose pants and an oversized

sweater that hid the fact that I was already starting to show. It was barely noticeable yet, just a slight rounding of my belly that could easily be attributed to too many comfort meals, but I knew

what it was.

And soon, everyone else would too.

I placed a hand over my stomach, feeling the subtle changes in my body that announced the

presence of new life growing inside me. This was going to be a long day.

Chapter 19-1

Clam

I walked to the pack house, nodding at the wolves I passed along the way. Everyone seemed to be in good spirits despite the ongoing crisis with Kellan. Pack life had a way of continuing even when everything felt like it was falling apart.

When I reached the meeting room, my father was already there, his face lighting up the moment he caught sight of me. He opened his arms in invitation, and I didn’t hesitate. I’d never get too old to hug my father, so I walked straight to him and let him envelop me in his comforting scent.

“Don’t be so greedy, Troy. I want to hug our baby too,” my mother grunted from behind us.

Not a second later, I felt her arms wrapping around me as my parents cocooned me between them, squeezing me tightly in a family sandwich that made me ache with love and sadness in equal measure.

“You look tired, dear. What’s wrong?” my mother asked, and I had no idea how she could sense that from behind my back, but her maternal instincts were clearly kicking in because she was totally

right.

“It’s just the morning sickness,” I admitted in a whisper, too exhausted to lie. “Except it’s not morning sickness anymore. It’s an all-day sickness.”

My mother gasped, pulling back to look at me with wide eyes. “Simone! Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” She immediately went into full mother-hen mode. “I have the perfect tonic for you, just wait until you try it. It’s an absolute miracle. I couldn’t have gone through two pregnancies without it, goddess bless Maya for gifting it to me twenty-five years ago. I definitely need to catch up with her soon.” She mumbled as she lost herself in her thoughts for a second, which was typical of her. “I’ll talk to Saul about it, okay?”

“Thank you, Mom,” I said, grateful for her immediate support and lack of judgment about the circumstances. They’d been surprised when I’d told them about my current situation, but they had supported me through every little change. I was damn lucky to have them as my parents.
