Chapter 45
Kieran
I clapped his shoulder.
“I’ll take you home,” I said.
His fist came swinging before I finished the sentence. I saw it coming, sidestepped, and caught his wrist. I twisted it just enough to lock his arm and pulled him forward so he stumbled into my chest.
The boy had speed. I’d give him that. But speed without control was just noise.
“You’re skilled,” I said, holding him still. “But don’t aim. higher than you can reach.”
At that instant, the front door opened and Serena walked
I released Josh immediately. She rushed into the room and grabbed her brother by the shoulders, turning him around, checking his face, his arms, his hands.

and right. “Did he hurt you?”
“I’m fine.” Josh pulled away from her grip. “And when I get older, I’m coming back to beat him up for you.”
Her parents came in right behind her. Her mother grabbed Josh by the ear and started scolding him, telling him he was impulsive and foolish for coming here alone. Her father stood behind them with his arms crossed and his mouth pressed into a thin line.
Josh didn’t apologize. “I came to defend my sister.”
Nobody said anything after that. They just turned and started to leave.
I watched Serena walk toward the door. My wolf was whimpering inside my chest, pressing against the bond.
She stopped at the door and turned around.
Her eyes found mine. There was no anger in them. No tears, no fire, no trembling lip. The same resignation I had caught in her expression before was staring at me.
My heart skipped a beat. 277

“I’ll stay at my parents’ house for a while,” she said. “When I have the money, I’ll come for the divorce. If you have any concerns, tell me now.”
I didn’t say anything. I just looked at her face and saw nothing I could argue with.
She was about to leave when Jenna’s voice came from the
side.
“Kieran is the one who hurt you.” Jenna’s voice cracked. “But are you ignoring me too?”
Serena looked at her. Something soft moved across her
face.
“Even if I divorce Kieran,” Serena said, “you and I will always be friends. That won’t change.”
She looked at Trevor who stood by the wall. She gave him
a small nod. He returned it.
Then she walked out the door with her family behind her.
Jenna stood there for a few seconds, staring at the empty goorway. Then she grabbed her bag off the couch and 1:34 followed them out without saying a word to me.

The house was quiet. Just me and Trevor.
He dropped into the chair across from me. “She seemed pretty determined.”
I didn’t respond.
“Does she have the money?”
I slumped back into the sofa.
“Her mother has a jewelry set,” I said. “It is a family’s heirloom. It’s been passed down for generations.” I
rubbed my hand across my face. “It’s worth more than a billion.”
I should have seen this coming. Her parents spoiled her. So of course she would go to them and they would give her everything they had left.
I made the wrong move with the money. I put up a wall and her parents handed her a ladder.
Trevor sat next to me. “So she has everything she needs to divorce you.”

I sighed. “Yes.”
“Then tell her the truth. Explain what’s going on with Sophie.”
“No.”
“Kieran-”
“I owe Sophie that much.” I kept my eyes on the ceiling. “If I tell Serena, she’ll tell my grandfather out of anger. And if my grandfather finds out Sophie’s son isn’t mine, he’ll come for them.”
“Then get them out of the city. Move them somewhere safe.”
“I’ve tried. Sophie has family here. She won’t leave and she won’t take my money.”
Trevor burst out laughing. But I knew his laughter was only out of mockery and nothing more.
“She won’t take your money.” He shook his head. “She lives in your house. She eats your food. She uses everything your money buys. But she won’t take money.” He looked at me. “That’s not pride, Kieran. That’s

performance. She’s playing you and you can’t see it because you feel guilty.”
I was done with this conversation. “She’s been through hell. She’s scared of my grandfather. I’m not abandoning her.”
Trevor leaned back. “Then divorce Serena. Let her go.”
“There is no divorce.” My voice dropped low enough that he stopped smiling. “Not now. Not ever.”
He held my gaze for a moment, then looked away.
“You won’t be able to keep this up,” he said. “Go back to the pack house. Stop sitting in this empty place waiting for a woman you pushed out the door.”
I looked around the living room. This house was ours. Serena and mine. We moved away from the pack house on purpose, to have something separate from the pack, from my family, from all of it.
Our marriage had been good for a long time. We had years of quiet mornings and easy dinners and her laugh filling up every room she walked into.

I wasn’t giving this up. She would come back and we would keep living the way we always had.
