Chapter 51

Serena

I closed the door and stood there for a moment.

Then I walked to the closet and pulled out a short black dress. I changed quickly, tied my hair up into a bun, and checked the mirror once before I opened the door again.

Kieran was still standing in the hallway.

His eyes moved over me slowly, from my face down to the hem of the dress and back up again. His lips parted just slightly and his eyes darkened with lust I was used to seeing on him.

Lust, Sophie was equally used to seeing.

I walked past him without a word.

The hotel restaurant sat on the ground floor. I scanned the room and spotted her immediately.

Madam Knox sat at a corner table with her hands folded in front of her.

I rushed over and wrapped my arms around her.

She held me tightly and pulled back to look at my face. “My dear girl.” Her eyes were bright. “You look wonderful.”

We took our seats and exchanged pleasantries. She asked about my parents, about my work, about life in Crimson territory. I answered everything with a smile that sat comfortably on my face because this woman deserved nothing less.

Kieran settled into the chair beside me, his arm resting on the back of my seat.

Then Madam Knox leaned forward and her expression

softened.

“It would have been perfect if there was a little one around us,” she said. “A child running between the tables and causing trouble.”

I leaned back in my chair. My hand almost went to my stomach but I caught it and pressed it flat against my thigh instead.

I said nothing.

Kieran filled the silence. “Soon,” he said. “We’ll have a child soon.” He said with complete certainty.

Madam Knox tilted her head. “You’ve been married for years and there are no children. When will you two give this old woman something to celebrate?”

“It’s my fault,” Kieran said without hesitation. “I’ll try my

best.”

I sat there like a mannequin placed at the table for decoration. My jaw was locked and my fingers pressed harder into my thigh under the tablecloth.

He was good at acting. Playing the role of the concerned husband, the humble Alpha taking responsibility. He could perform devotion the way other people performed breathing.

Such a phony bastard.

I leaned forward and cleared my throat. “So when do you plan to return home?”

“Soon enough,” she said. “But when I go back, I’ll come and say hello to you both first.”

The dinner lasted another hour. We talked about life and when she could no longer keep up, she stood and announced that she wanted to retire for the night.

Kieran took my hand as we walked with Madam Knox to the elevator. His fingers slid between mine and locked there, showcasing an affection that we did not possess.

Aina stirred inside me, pressing toward the bond, toward the heat of his palm against mine.

The elevator doors opened. Madam Knox stepped inside and turned to wave at us, and we stood there like the perfect couple with our fingers intertwined.

The doors closed.

I pulled my hand back immediately.

His grip caught my arm.

“We need to talk.”

“I have nothing I want to talk about.” I pulled my hand back but his grip was tight.

Aina pressed against my chest, low and restless, pushing toward him even as the words left my mouth. She was so needy for him it was very aggravating.

“That should prove to you how important this divorce is to me,” I said. “My mother would rather give up her heirloom than watch her daughter suffer in a marriage.”

He walked forward and placed both hands on my shoulders. His touch was warm and his voice dropped.

“We don’t need to get a divorce.” His thumbs pressed gently against my collarbone. “The jewelry doesn’t have to be sold. We can just stay the way we used to be.”
