Chapter 159

Kieran

I walked out of the hospital and stood on the pavement.

I counted five minutes.

Then I went back in through the side entrance and took the

stairs to the second floor.

The maternity wing sat quieter than the rest of the building,

with lower voices and softer light. I walked to the nurses’ station and stood until a woman looked up.

“I need the name of the doctor treating my wife,” I said.

“Serena Thawthorne.”

The nurse’s hands stilled on her desk. “I’m sorry, I can’t share that information with you.”

I stepped toward the counter before she finished.

“She is my wife,” I said. “I am the Alpha of Crimson pack. I

need that name.”

She looked at the counter and didn’t move.

“A checkup.” She lifted one shoulder. “Routine. I was just

leaving.”

She had a look on her face I could not describe, completely

different from the woman at the gala. She moved to step

around me. I quickly put my hand out and caught hers.

“Sophie.” I looked at her. “Are you alright?”

She looked at my hand and then at my face.

“I’m fine,” she said. “Don’t worry about me.”

“I want you to call me if you need anything.” I dropped my hand. “I mean it. I’m trying to keep the marriage together, but that doesn’t mean I stop caring about what happens to you and Ethan. Call me.”

Sophie looked at me for a moment. Then a small smile curved her face.

“Ethan’s birthday is coming up,” she said. “He keeps asking for you. I know the timing isn’t great, but.” She shifted the bag on her shoulder. “Maybe dinner? He really has been asking.”

Dinner was a great way to ask her what had happened that 2/3 aay and what she could’ve been doing when Benjamin died.?

“Serena, how are you?” She smiled like we were old friends

before coming closer and taking a seat.

“What do you want?” I asked without the friendliness rhat

existed in her own words.

“Are we still on?” she asked. “About the plan to push the

divorce?”

I looked at her.

For some reason, my thoughts drifted towards the night I walked into the house only to be welcomed by a cake that had been baked for her before, food she had eaten, by a man who loved her beyond rationality.

Compared to her, it seemed like I was the one who held no power because why else would I be fed the remnants she couldn’t finish?

I pushed it down.

“Is that why you came?” I said.

Sophie placed both palms flat on the table and leaned

forward.
