142 Chapter 142 Complete Devastation
Elena’s POV 1
Sleep had become a distant memory since the night I encountered Briar. My body refused rest, forcing me to be the last person to close my eyes and the first to greet each dawn that followed.
Every waking moment had been consumed by a desperate search for answers about her identity and origins. The resources at my disposal were being stretched thin as I dug deeper into the mystery surrounding this girl who haunted my thoughts.
The most troubling aspect wasn’t just her presence among the hunters, but her scent. She didn’t carry the familiar essence of our kind. Instead, she bore their mark, the distinct smell of those who had devoted their lives to hunting us down.
What broke my heart was the realization that she had been raised in complete isolation from our world. She had no understanding of who we truly were, what remarkable abilities we possessed, or the incredible strength that flowed through her own veins. They had kept her in darkness
about her own nature.
Our search for the hunters‘ base of operations continued to yield nothing but frustration. They could be operating from anywhere, and their human nature made tracking them exponentially more difficult than pursuing our own kind.
The werewolf community stood united behind us, but the hunters held a potential ace that made my blood run cold. If they chose to expose our existence to the broader human population, they would have an entire species as their allies.
Something told me they preferred secrecy over revelation. Their goal seemed to be our complete elimination, driven by the misguided belief that we posed a threat to humanity. The irony wasn’t lost on me that we had dedicated

ourselves to protecting humans, going to extraordinary lengths to shield them from real dangers.
A nagging suspicion had begun eating at me. Could this be the government’s way of disposing of us while maintaining plausible deniability? They had promised us immunity after we helped eliminate those creatures that were actually slaughtering innocent humans. Perhaps those promises meant nothing.
The sound of movement behind me broke through my brooding thoughts.
“You’re awake again,” Damien observed, his voice heavy with sleep as he sat up in bed. I hadn’t even noticed him stirring while I sat hunched over the laptop at our bedroom desk.
“Can’t seem to shut my mind off,” I admitted, closing the computer with more force than necessary.
“Come back to bed,” he said, his voice carrying that gentle command that always made something inside me respond.
I abandoned the desk and returned to him, allowing myself to be pulled onto the mattress and wrapped in the security of his embrace. His arms created a cocoon around me that temporarily blocked out the chaos swirling in my
head.
“This is eating you alive from the inside,” he murmured against my hair. “We have scouts covering every possible lead. We’re doing everything within our power to locate them.”
“If only it were that straightforward,” I replied, pressing myself closer to his warmth. “They’ve vanished completely. This level of organization suggests they’re far from being some amateur group of human vigilantes.”
“You’re absolutely right. These are professional hunters, and we will track them down eventually. They have to have a central location somewhere,” he said, his fingers tracing soothing patterns along my spine.
I melted further into Damien’s embrace, desperate for these precious

moments when safety felt possible. Only when he held me like this could I imagine a future where we might actually recover our daughter and restore our fractured family.
The fragile peace shattered when his phone erupted into harsh ringing, demanding immediate attention.
“The werewolf council,” he announced grimly, already reaching for the device.
I remained pressed against him, straining to catch fragments of the conversation that was clearly grave in nature. Damien’s body language shifted dramatically as he absorbed whatever information was being relayed
to him.
He was already moving, pulling away from me and grabbing clothes while still engaged in the call.
“What’s happened?” I demanded the moment he disconnected.
“Peak Pack pack was attacked during the night,” he said, his voice carrying a weight that made my stomach drop.
“How extensive is the damage?”
“Complete devastation. Initial reports suggest there are no survivors.”
The words hit me like a physical blow. “That pack has hundreds of members. How could anyone possibly eliminate that many people in a single night?”
“I think we just got our answer about how well–organized these hunters really are,” Damien said grimly.
“And how vastly we’ve underestimated their numbers,” I added, watching
realization dawn across his features.
From the look dawning on his face, I guessed this possibility hadn’t occurred to him before, and I could see him processing the terrifying implications. If the council was summoning him personally, the situation demanded
immediate investigation.

“That territory is hours from here,” I pointed out.
“I’ll take the helicopter and bring a full security detail. I won’t take any unnecessary risks,” he promised, already moving toward the door.
“This could be exactly what they’re hoping for. You could be walking straight into their trap,” I warned, fear gripping my chest at the thought of losing him
too.
He paused long enough to lean down and capture my lips in a kiss that tasted of goodbye and promises. Then he was gone, leaving me alone with my fears and the growing certainty that we were facing something far more dangerous than we had ever imagined.
The silence that followed his departure felt suffocating, and I found myself reaching for the laptop again, desperate for any distraction from the scenarios playing out in my mind.
