211 Chapter 211 Impact Without Warning
Briar’s POV T
The baseball bat trembled in Ruth’s grip before she finally lowered it to her side. Her shoulders sagged with relief, but her eyes darted frantically toward each window, scanning for any sign we might have been followed.
“Asher. What the hell are you doing here?” Ruth’s voice carried a sharp edge of panic.
“Looking for you. I need answers.” Asher’s response was direct, unwavering.
“I can’t help you. You need to leave.”
“I know Alpha Vanguard was planning to kill you. That’s why you ran. My parents helped you escape, didn’t they?” Asher pressed, and I caught the strange way Ruth’s gaze shifted to me.
“I’m Briar. Asher’s mate,” I offered by way of introduction.
“She’s Elena and Damien’s daughter,” Asher added.
The change in Ruth’s expression was immediate and dramatic. Her eyes widened with recognition and something that looked like hope.
“Listen, if you need help or a safer place to hide than being out here alone, my parents will take you in. You can return to their pack. They won’t turn you away,” I said, meaning every word.
“That would mean declaring war against Elias,” she replied, her voice heavy with the weight of that possibility.
“Have you forgotten who Briar’s parents are? They could handle him without breaking a sweat,” Asher said with confidence.
“Why are you here? What made you come looking for me?” Ruth asked, though she was already moving toward the kitchen. We followed, settling around a worn wooden table while she continued her nervous surveillance of

the windows.
“Because I believe Alpha Vanguard murdered my parents. I want the truth. My brother and sister have accepted whatever story he’s feeding them this week, but I can’t do that,” Asher explained, his jaw tight with determination.
“Elias changing his story again. That’s exactly what I’d expect,” she said, finally taking a seat but never fully relaxing.
“So my parents did help you get out?” Asher asked.
“Yes. I had no choice but to run. He was going to kill me. But now I’m living in constant terror, so I’m not sure which situation is worse,” she admitted, her hands wrapping around herself protectively.
“And then he killed my parents because they helped you,” Asher stated matter–of–factly.
“I only discovered what happened when they missed their regular check–in. They contacted me every six months without fail, and when eight months passed without a word, I called your father’s phone. Your brother answered instead. I couldn’t let him know it was me calling, but he told me about parents‘ deaths.”
I studied her face carefully. “He didn’t recognize your voice?”
“No. I don’t think so. Why?” Ruth asked, and I could see the nervousness creeping back into her features.
your
“You were his Luna for years. I find it hard to believe he wouldn’t recognize your voice,” I said gently but firmly.
She shot up from her chair and began pacing the small kitchen like a caged animal.
“What is it?” Asher asked, sensing her growing agitation.
“Shortly after I learned about your parents‘ deaths, someone attacked me. I had to abandon my safe house immediately. I spent weeks living rough, staying completely off the grid until I could secure a new identity. He must

have told Elias,” Ruth said, her voice shaking.
“I don’t know if he would…” Asher started, but I placed a restraining hand on his arm.
“Yes, he would have reported it to the Alpha. That’s where his loyalty lies. Everyone in the pack would see you as nothing more than a runaway Luna. A traitor. Am I right?” I asked. Asher leaned back in his chair, looking at me with new respect.
“You’re really starting to understand how werewolf society works,” Asher observed.
“Briar. Now I remember why your name seemed familiar. You’re the one who was kidnapped and raised by Hunters,” Ruth said, still pacing.
“The Hunters are finished. My parents destroyed them completely. You don’t need to worry about that threat anymore,” I assured her.
“What about your brother? Did he follow you here?” she asked.
“Absolutely not. We left in the dead of night when no one was around. We watched for tails the entire drive here, and there was nothing,” Asher said firmly. Ruth nodded, but I could see she wasn’t entirely convinced.
“If you found me, Elias can too. I need to move again.”
“We only found you because my mother tracked you down. She has resources that far exceed what the Alpha has access to. I seriously doubt he has any idea where you are,” I said, trying to calm her fears.
But privately, I knew she was right to be paranoid. If she’d been in this location for any significant time, it was definitely time to relocate. Even my Hunter training had taught me that much about staying hidden.
“We need to find out exactly how my parents died. The Alpha keeps changing his story. First vampires, then rogues,” Asher said.
“That’s his pattern. Lies and manipulation. He treats that pack like his personal kingdom of horrors.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.
“He uses his warriors as his personal enforcers for everything from drug running to sexually assaulting the she–wolves in his pack. He treats them like property, like slaves,” Ruth said, her voice filled with disgust.
“That’s why you left,” I realized.
“I tried reporting him to the werewolf council. They ignored everything. They refused to act.”
“We’re heading back to the pack now. You should seriously consider leaving this town. You’ve been here too long and gotten too comfortable,” Asher advised.
“I was thinking the same thing,” Ruth agreed.
“Good. If we need to contact you again, we’ll have Elena and Damien track you down. They’re experts at it, and they won’t alert the Alpha,” Asher promised.
“Thank you,” Ruth said with genuine gratitude.
We left her house as she began packing immediately. Walking to our car, we maintained constant vigilance, both of us scanning our surroundings for any signs of surveillance. Our training served us well in situations like this.
During the drive back toward pack territory, we rode mostly in silence. We were both processing everything we’d learned, occasionally sharing theories but mostly just trying to piece together the puzzle.
The impact came without warning. Our car lurched forward violently, and I spun around to see blazing headlights directly behind us. The vehicle rammed us again before I could even process what was happening, and Asher fought desperately to maintain control as our car skidded across the asphalt.
