My wrists went numb before the blindfold came off again. The rope rubbed the same cuts over and over until my skin felt wet and sticky. When the cloth finally lifted, torchlight stabbed my eyes. I blinked fast and tried to sit up, but a boot pressed into my thigh and shoved me back down.
“Stop moving,” a man snapped.
I swallowed, throat dry, and turned my face away. My cheek dragged on stone. I pulled in one breath, then another, forcing myself to keep my breathing quiet.
A different guy crouched beside me. He grabbed my chin and tilted my face up like I was an object. His fingers were rough and cold.
“You’re awake,” he said, smiling.
“Don’t touch me,” I said. My voice shook, but I didn’t care.
He laughed and let go, wiping his hand on his trousers. “Still got attitude.”
“I’m not scared of you,” I said, even though my heart was slamming so hard it hurt.
Someone behind him snorted. “You should be.”
I stared at the ground, jaw tight. My hands pulled against the rope, testing it, but it was tied tighter than before. My ankles were tied too. I shifted my knees closer to my stomach anyway, curling around it without making it obvious.
The calm one spoke from the back of the chamber. “Boss wants her moved soon. Alpha’s sniffing around the border.”
“He can sniff all he wants,” the guy near me said. “He won’t find this place.”
I lifted my head. “You don’t know Damien.”
The guy crouched again, leaning close. “Tell me about him,” he said lazily. “Is he as scary as everyone says, or just hype?”
I swallowed hard. “He’s coming.”
He tilted his head. “That’s not an answer.”
“It’s the only answer you need,” I said.
He reached for the blindfold again, waving it in front of my face. My stomach flipped.
“Don’t,” I said, twisting my shoulders.
He chuckled. “Boss doesn’t want you seeing anything.”
“I’m already clever,” I snapped. “Put that on me and I’ll bite your fingers.”
His smile faltered slightly.

A sound cut through the cave, it felt like a loud roar
It didn’t sound human.
Everyone froze.
Another roar shook the tunnel, closer this time. It vibrated through the stone beneath
“What the hell…” someone muttered.
A scream echoed from deeper inside the cave. It wasn’t clean. It was wet and cut off mid-breath.
The men snapped into motion. No guns came up this time. Instead, shoulders rolled. Bones shifted under skin. One of them stumbled back as his spine arched unnaturally.
“Shift,” the calm one ordered.
The air filled with cracking bones and tearing fabric. Fur pushed through skin in violent waves. Jaws extended. Teeth sharpened. Their bodies dropped to all fours, eyes flashing gold.
I pressed my back into the rock, heart in my throat.
A massive black shape filled the tunnel entrance.
Damien.
He didn’t hesitate, he launched forward.
The first rogue didn’t even finish shifting before Damien slammed into him. Claws tore, flesh ripped. The cave echoed with snarls and the sickening sound of bodies hitting
stone.
Blood sprayed across the ground.
Another wolf lunged at Damien’s flank. He twisted mid-air, jaws snapping around its throat. A crunch echoed. The rogue dropped, twitching.
I couldn’t breathe.
Two more charged together. Damien met them head-on. Fur collided. Teeth flashed. He moved faster than I could track. He ducked under one bite, raked claws across another’s belly, then reared up and brought his weight down hard.
One rogue yelped as Damien’s jaws clamped into its shoulder and shook violently.
The calm one shifted last. Bigger than the others. Dark brown fur. He circled, waiting for an opening.
Damien’s grey eyes flicked to me for half a second.
That was enough.
The brown wolf lunged from the side.

Damien pivoted too late to fully dodge. Teeth grazed his side. He snarled, vicious and
loud, and rammed his body into the rogue, slamming him into the wall so hard dust rained down.
They rolled.
Claws carved through fur. Blood darkened the stone.
The brown wolf snapped at Damien’s throat.
Damien caught his muzzle in his jaws and bit down.
The sound that came out of the rogue wasn’t a howl. It was a choke.
Damien didn’t let go.
He held, pressed harder and then the rogue went limp.
Silence crashed into the cave, the remaining wolf tried to bolt.
Damien pounced, dragging it down by the hind leg. He ended it fast.
Breathing hard, chest heaving, Damien stood over them.
Then he shifted back.
Bones cracked in reverse. Fur receded. Skin reformed. He dropped to one knee, human again, covered in blood that wasn’t all his.
His eyes locked on me instantly.
“Sienna.”
My throat closed. “Damien.”
He moved to me fast, dropping in front of me. His hands shook as he grabbed the rope at my wrists.
“Hold still,” he said roughly.
“I am,” I whispered. “I’m trying.”
He tore the rope apart with his bare hands this time, not even looking at it. My hands fell free and I hissed from the sting. He grabbed my face immediately, forcing me to look at him.
“Talk to me,” he said. “Are you hurt?”
I shook my head fast, tears spilling. “I’m here. You came.”
His forehead pressed to mine. His breath was uneven. “I always come.”
“Get me out,” I said, gripping his shoulders. “Please.”
“I’ve got you.”
His hand hovered over my stomach. “And the baby?”

“I think we’re okay,” I said quickly. “They didn’t hit me.”
His jaw flexed. “They won’t get another chance.”

He freed my ankles and helped me stand. My legs trembled violently and I collapsed into him. His arm wrapped around my waist, pulling me tight against his chest.
“Can you walk?” he asked.
“I can,” I said, clutching him. “Just don’t let go.”
“I won’t,” he replied.
