My eyes were wide as hell and my heart was pounding so loud I could hear it in my ears.
Kade’s hand stayed pressed tight over my mouth, his scarred face right above mine.
The claw marks on his cheek looked even meaner up close.
“Don’t make a sound,” he whispered, voice low and rough. “I mean it, Sienna.”
I tried to jerk my head away but he held me still. “What the hell are you doing?” I mumbled against his palm, the words coming out all muffled and scared. My whole body shook, “get off me!”
He didn’t answer. Instead he slid one arm under my knees and the other behind my back and lifted me up like I weighed nothing, bridal style.
I was smaller than him by a lot. My head barely reached his chest when he stood up straight, and his arms felt like steel bands around me.
I kicked and pushed at his shoulders but it was useless. He was way too strong.
“Put me down!” I hissed, still trying to keep my voice quiet because the guards were right outside the door. “Kade, stop! This is crazy!”
He ignored me and carried me straight out of the bedroom.
The two guards standing in the hallway didn’t even flinch.
They just watched us pass like it was normal. My stomach dropped. What the fuck? They were supposed to
protect me.
“Kade, the guards! They’re just letting you take me? What is going on?” I twisted in his arms, panic rising fast. “Damien’s going to kill you for this! Put me down right now!”
He kept walking, boots quiet on the floor, heading for the side exit that led straight outside.
The cool night air hit my face as soon as we stepped through the door.
He didn’t stop until we were a good twenty feet from the packhouse, near the edge of the trees.
Then he finally set me down on my feet but kept one hand on my arm so I couldn’t run.
I stumbled a little, still dizzy from the head wound.
“What are you doing?” I demanded, yanking my arm but he didn’t let go. “Do you know how dangerous this is? Rogues just attacked! Damien left guards for a reason, if anyone sees us out here alone they’re going to think-”
“I know I’ve been weird to you this whole time,” he cut in, voice flat. He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a small knife and a sharpening stone. He started dragging the blade across the stone slow and

I stared at him, breathing fast, “what do you mean by that?”

He kept sharpening, the soft scrape scrape sound making my skin crawl, “Damien is good at stealing what’s mine.”
“What are you talking about?” My voice cracked. I took a small step back but his grip on my arm tightened. “Kade, you’re scaring me. Are you going to kill me? Is that what this is? Just tell me straight.”
He let out a short laugh but there was no humor in it, “kill you?” He tested the knife edge with his thumb, then kept sharpening.
“Me and Alice were dating for years. Real shit, we were happy and then one day Damien finds out they’re mates. Instead of doing the right thing and rejecting her, he marked her. Marked her right in front of me even though we were best friends too, he didn’t give a fuck.”
I felt my mouth drop open. “Wait… Alice? You and Alice? But she’s Damien’s ex-fated mate. He broke the bond with her. You’re saying he stole her from you?”
“Exactly.” Kade’s jaw clenched. He flipped the knife and kept working the blade. “I had to watch my best friend take the girl I loved, watched him put his mark on her neck like it was nothing and then fucking abandon her line nothing, so yeah, I’ve been watching you since day one. Waiting. Because now you’re his. And I’m done watching him take everything.”
My head was spinning. “This is insane. You can’t be serious. Alice never said anything about you, please, just take me back inside, we can talk about this. You don’t have to-”
Before I could finish, he dropped the knife and stone, wrapped one thick arm around my throat from behind and yanked me back against his chest. His grip wasn’t choking me yet, but it was tight enough that I froze.
“Now I’m going to steal what’s his too,” he said, voice right in my ear.
Then he kissed me, hard. His mouth crashed down on mine, all rough and angry, like he was trying to prove something. I tasted salt and metal from the fight earlier.
I shoved at his chest the second his lips touched mine. “Are you mad? Are you insane?” I gasped when he pulled back just enough for me to speak. “Get the hell off me! Damien’s going to-”
A loud growl ripped through the trees behind us. We both turned at the same time.
Damien stood there at the edge of the woods, his chest heaving, his eyes locked on us.
