Chapter 68

:

I pushed the front door open and stepped out into the cold night.

My bare feet stung on the gravel but I kept walking anyway but I couldn’t stay inside that house for another second to even gather my things properly.

The moment he said I could leave, I was out of there.

“You paid him,” I muttered to myself, m voice shaking. “You actually paid someone to scare me with a gun just so I wouldn’t leave, w pphat the actual fuck Ala XX Srs’r6sr6s tryn?”

Tears came fast. I raked my fingers through my hair and pulled hard trying to breathe. “I knew you were crazy. I knew you were controlling. But this? This is some next level psycho shit. You staged everything?”

I wiped my wet cheeks with the sleeve of his shirt. “I don’t even know what I feel anymore. I’m so angry. I’m scared. I’m hurt. Why does it hurt so bad? I shouldn’t even care about you.”

I walked faster down the dark empty road.

The streetlights were too far apart and everything looked black.

My phone was dead in my hand. I stared at the blank screen.

“I can’t call Frank. I can’t drag him into this. He doesn’t need to know how fucked up my life is right now. But what do I do? Where am I even going?”

I laughed through the tears but it sounded ugly. “No money, no shoes, just his stupid shirt. Real smart Hazel. Real fucking smart.”

My legs started getting heavy. The road felt like it was tilting under me. I rubbed my eyes hard trying to stay awake. “Just keep walking. Someone will come, someone has to.”

A dark figure appeared ahead standing on the side of the road.

I squinted trying to make out who it was. My vision started blurring badly.

“Alan?” I whispered as my knees gave out.

Everything went black.

I woke up in a huge bed with soft white sheets.

My heart jumped hard. I sat up fast looking around the big fancy room with tall windows and expensive furniture.

“Oh gosh no,” I whispered. He caught me again, Alan found me.

Then I noticed the room looked different, the colors were lighter.

The bed was bigger, the windows faced a different view, this wasn’t the lake house.

Footsteps came from the doorway. I flinched and pulled the blanket up to my chest.

“You’re finally awake,” a calm voice said.

I turned my head quick. Gal stood there in casual clothes – gray sweatpants and a plain black t-shirt.

He looked so different without the suit, softer, more normal, my eyes widened.

“Gal?” I said with a voice shaky, “what the hell?”

He walked closer and sat on the edge of the bed. “I was driving home late last night and saw someone walking on the side of the road like a lost person. Thought it was some homeless guy in my neighborhood and I was like the fuck, this side of the world, that’s as rare as diamond. Then I got closer and realized it was you, you passed out right in front of my car.”

I moved away from him scooting back against the headboard. “I… I don’t remember. How did I get here?”

He leaned forward resting his elbows on his knees, “I carried you inside, you were freezing and barely conscious. What happened Hazel? You look like you’ve been through hell.”

I hugged my knees tight to my chest and looked down at the blanket. “Nothing. It’s nothing.”

“That’s not nothing,” he said, hisvoice serious now. “I can’t see my executive assistant walking the streets like that and pretend everything is fine. You disappeared after the cruise. You said you were coming back to work and then nothing. Talk to me.”

I shook my head fast still avoiding his eyes. Tears started burning, “it’s Alan. I just… I never want to see him again.”

Gal stayed quiet for a second then sighed, “so this is why you’ve been acting so unprofessionally? Missing work, not answering calls, running around the city in the middle of the night in nothing but a shirt?”

I nodded and broke into tears, “I’m sorry. I’ll come back to work properly. I promise, just give me another chance.”

He shook his head, “that offer expired.”

My head snapped up, I looked at him with furrowed eyebrows. “Are you firing me?”

“Yes,” he said simply.

I stared at him shocked my mouth open. “What? After everything? You’re really firing me right now?”

He scooted closer on the bed until his knee almost touched mine, “because a new offer just opened up.”

I furrowed my eyebrows deeper confused. “What new offer? What are you talking about?”

Gal looked straight at me eyes steady. “Hazel I want you for myself.”

I blinked hard. “What?”

He didn’t smile, “not as my assistant, not as my employee. I want you, just you. No Alan. No running. I’ve watched you struggle with him for too long. I can give you something better, something real, if you’ll let me.”

I hugged my knees tighter my heart racing, “Gall… I don’t… I don’t know what to say. You’re my boss. This is crazy.”

“I’m not your boss anymore,” he said quietly. “I just fired you. So now I’m just a man who’s been waiting for the right moment to tell you how I really feel. You don’t have to decide right now but I’m not letting you walk back out into whatever mess Alan created. Take all the time you need, you’re safe here. No one’s coming through those gates unless I say so.”

I wiped my face with shaky hands. “Thank you for picking me up.”

Gal stood up slow. “Get some rest. We’ll talk more in the morning. But Hazel?”

I looked up at him.

“I meant what I said,” he told me. “I want you for myself, and I always get what I want.”
