Chapter 77

They all stared at me like I had completely lost my mind.

Elias blinked slowly, his mouth slightly open. Rafe leaned back in his chair and rubbed his jaw. Theo frowned and crossed his arms. Alice looked between us, her eyebrows raised like she was waiting for a joke.

No one laughed at all.

I shifted on my feet, my hands twisting together in front of me. My cheeks got hot, and I hated how small I felt. I raked my fingers through my hair, trying to keep my breathing steady, but my fingers got caught and I pulled too hard. My scalp stung, and I pressed my nails into my palms because I needed the shaking to stop before anyone noticed.

Then the door opened.

Kade walked in like it was any normal day. “What are y’all talking about?”

My whole body locked.

For one second, I couldn’t breathe. The room tilted, and I grabbed Damien’s arm. My heart jumped straight into my throat. Kade stood there with that same scarred face, that same calm posture, that same voice I had heard in that room when the walls felt too close. My stomach twisted so hard I thought I might throw up.

I took a quick step back and hid behind Damien, grabbing the back of his shirt with both hands. My fingers curled into the fabric until my knuckles hurt. My breathing got fast and shallow. He was here. He was actually here. My body remembered the locked room. I could still feel the door shutting. I could still hear his footsteps outside. I could still feel myself backing into the wall.

“No,” I whispered, shaking my head. “No, no, no.”

Kade’s eyes flicked to me, and I flinched so hard my shoulder hit Damien’s back. My nails dug deeper into his shirt. I thought he was going to grab me again. I thought he was going to drag me out like last time. My knees felt weak, and I pressed my forehead against Damien’s shoulder because looking at Kade felt like touching a bruise.

Damien didn’t move. He stayed calm, his voice low. “Kade has been here the whole time looking for you too.”

I stared at the back of Damien’s head, my fingers tightening in his shirt. “What? No. That can’t be right.”

My voice cracked on the last word. I hated that I sounded terrified, but I couldn’t stop. My chest kept rising too fast, and every time I tried to breathe slower, my body refused. I leaned closer to Damien, almost hiding my face against his back. “Damien, please. I saw him. I heard him. He was there.”

Kade leaned against the wall, arms folded. His scarred face stayed calm. “Don’t you think it’s possible they also shifted into me if they shifted into Damien?”

I looked at him again, only for half a second, and my throat closed. He sounded reasonable. That made it worse. The one in that room had sounded reasonable too, right before he came too close. I shook my head fast and stepped fully behind Damien.

Damien reached back without looking and touched my wrist. His fingers wrapped around me carefully, not pulling, just holding. “Breathe, Sienna.”

I tried. I really did. I dragged air in through my nose, but it came out broken.

Damien nodded once, still facing the others. “We can’t let the pack members know what’s going on yet. Not until we figure everything out. The identity of whoever is behind this has to stay secret for now.”

Elias rubbed his jaw. “That makes sense. We can’t have the whole pack panicking.”

Rafe nodded slowly. “Yeah. We keep it quiet. For now.”

Theo gave a small nod. Alice stayed quiet but didn’t argue. Her eyes moved to my hands gripping Damien’s shirt, and her face softened.

I stayed behind Damien, my heart still racing. I kept waiting for Kade to say something else or look at me the wrong way, but he just stood there like any other alpha. I didn’t trust it. I knew the pack members still didn’t want me here.

Damien reached back and took my hand. “Come, Let’s go to the room.”

I followed him without saying a word. I kept my fingers locked around his, and when we passed Kade, I moved so close to Damien that my shoulder brushed his arm. I didn’t look at Kade. I stared at the floor and counted every step until the hallway swallowed the room behind us.

My mind was spinning the whole way up the stairs. Every creak made me look back. Every shadow made my body tense. Damien slowed his pace and kept glancing down at me, but I couldn’t speak.

When we got inside our bedroom, he closed the door and turned to me.

He pulled me into a hug right away. His arms wrapped around me tight. I buried my face in his chest and let the tears come. My shoulders shook as I cried, and my hands gripped the sides of his shirt like I was scared someone would pull me away from him again.

“It was horrible,” I said, my voice muffled against his shirt. “Kade took me. He locked me in that room and kept coming in. He kissed me and told me he wanted me for himself. I thought I was going to die there. I thought you weren’t coming. I was so scared the whole time.”

Damien rubbed my back slowly, his hand moving up and down. He kissed the top of my head. “It’s okay. You’re safe now. I’m here.”

I cried harder for a minute, then pulled back a little and looked up at him. My eyes were still wet. “I’m sorry for putting you through so much trouble all the time. I keep running into danger and you always have to come save me.”

He shook his head. “It’s fine.”

I furrowed my brow and looked at him, “How on earth did you find me?”
