Chapter 82

Damien turned and walked straight out the door, shoulders stiff.

I grabbed the blanket off the bed and wrapped it around myself fast. My legs were still shaky from everything that had just happened but I followed him anyway. My fingers dug into the fabric, hair falling over my face. “Damien, wait!”

He didn’t stop. He walked down the stairs and out into the courtyard where the whole pack was still gathered. The chanting hit us like a wall.

“Choose one now!”

“Choose one now!”

“Choose one now!”

I stayed right behind him, blanket clutched tight to my chest. My bare feet hit the cold stone steps. Everyone turned to look at us. Their faces were angry, eyes hard. I felt like I was going to throw up. I swallowed hard and pressed closer to Damien’s back like that could somehow hide me.

Damien stopped at the top of the steps. He stood tall, shoulders back. The chanting got quieter for a second as they waited to hear what he would say. His jaw flexed once.

He raised his voice so everyone could hear. “I choose Sienna. I will never cast her out. She is my Luna and she is staying.”

The crowd went dead silent for one heartbeat. I froze beside him, fingers locked around the blanket.

Then it exploded.

Shouts came from every direction. People pushed forward, faces red, fists in the air. A few wolves shoved forward, and guards stepped in fast.

“You can’t be serious!”

“She’s human!”

“You’re choosing her over us?”

“You’re going to get us all killed!”

I grabbed Damien’s arm, my voice cracking. “Damien, what the hell are you doing?”

He didn’t answer me. He just took my wrist and started pulling me back toward the packhouse doors. I stumbled after him, blanket slipping off one shoulder. My toes scraped the stone as I grabbed the blanket before it dropped.

“What have you done?” I hissed, trying to keep up. “They’re losing their minds out there. You just told them you’re picking me over the entire pack!”

He kept walking, grip tight on my wrist. “I’m not picking anyone over anyone. You’re staying. That’s final.”

I tried to yank my arm free but he didn’t let go. “You can’t just say that and expect them to be okay with it. They’re scared. They think I’m the reason everything is falling apart.”

Before he could answer, one of the elders stepped out from the side of the building. It was old Marcus, the one with the white beard and the deep voice. He raised his hand. His eyes moved to me, and my chest tightened.

“We need to speak to you now, Alpha.”

Damien stopped. He looked at me, his face still hard. “I’ll be back for you.”

He let go of my wrist and walked toward the elders. They led him away down a side path toward the meeting hall. I stood there watching until they disappeared around the corner, the blanket slipping lower on my shoulders. My wrist still felt warm, and I rubbed it. I dragged my thumb over my wrist.

I turned and ran back inside the packhouse, up the stairs, and straight into our room. I slammed the door and leaned against it, breathing hard. My hands were shaking so bad I had to press them against my thighs. I pushed my hair back with trembling fingers.

The room felt too quiet now. I slid down the door until I was sitting on the floor, knees pulled up. I kept replaying Damien’s words in my head. He chose me. Out loud. In front of everyone. Part of me wanted to cry from relief. The other part wanted to scream because I knew what that was going to cost him. I hugged the blanket tighter and stared at the floor. My throat felt dry, and I kept licking my lips, trying not to look as scared as I felt. Outside, the shouting kept rising through the windows, making the floor feel unsteady under

I raked my fingers through my hair and pulled hard. “What the fuck did you just do, Damien?”

I stayed on the floor for a long time, rocking back and forth a little, trying to calm down. My mind wouldn’t stop spinning. The pack was furious. The elders were pulling him away. Everything felt like it was about to blow up. I pressed my palm over my mouth, breathing through my fingers, trying not to break down like some helpless girl in a mess she didn’t start.

I followed the elders into the small meeting room at the back of the hall. The door shut behind us with a heavy click. The three of them stood in a line, arms crossed, faces serious. Old Marcus was in the middle, his white beard almost touching his chest. I stayed near the table, watching them.

Marcus spoke first. “Have you lost your mind?”

I leaned against the table and crossed my arms. “No. I haven’t.”

The second elder, a woman named Clara, stepped forward. “You just told the entire pack you are choosing a human over them. Do you understand what that sounds like?”

I shrugged. “It sounds like the truth.”

Clara’s eyes widened. “The truth? The pack is terrified. They think she’s the reason the rogues are getting stronger. They think she’s the reason pups are getting sick. And you stand there and say you choose her?”

I looked at all three of them. “She is carrying my pup. She is my Luna. I’m not throwing her out because some rumors got started.”

The third elder, a tall man named Victor, shook his head. “You are risking everything we have built. The alliances. The safety of every wolf here. For what? A girl who can’t even shift?”

I pushed off the table and stood straighter. “She’s more than that. You haven’t seen what I’ve seen.”

Marcus rubbed his beard, voice low. “We have seen enough. The pack is ready to turn on you if you keep this up.” “Let them try.”

Clara threw her hands up. “You are being reckless. You are putting the entire pack in danger for your own feelings.”

Victor stepped closer. “If you continue down this path, you will lose the loyalty of every wolf under you.”

I stared at them, my jaw tight. “I’m not changing my mind.”

Marcus sighed heavily. He looked at the other two, then back at me. His fingers tightened around the chair.

“Then you have chosen against your pack.”
