I stared at the blood on my panties for a few seconds before my brain even accepted what I was seeing. My fingers tightened around the waistband, and my breath caught so sharply Damien’s head snapped toward me.
“Sienna?” he said, stepping closer. “What is it?”
I tried to answer, but my mouth felt dry. I looked down again, then back at him. “There’s blood.”
His face changed so fast it scared me.
“How much?” he asked, voice low.
“I don’t know.”
He stood and grabbed a towel from the rack, wrapping it around me carefully. His jaw was tight, but his hands stayed gentle. “Sit down.”
I shook my head. “No, don’t do that calm voice. I hate that voice.”
“Sienna, sit down.”
I sat on the closed toilet lid because my legs felt weird anyway.
My heart kicked. “No.”
He looked up. “No?”
I grabbed his wrist “I don’t want the pack healer.”
“Sienna.”
“No.” I shook my head, already feeling tears burn. “I don’t want to go back there. I don’t want everyone knowing. I don’t want elders whispering outside the door, I don’t want Alice’s name in the hallway, I don’t want them looking at my stomach like this baby belongs to the pack.”
His face softened, but the fear was still there under it. “A human doctor will not understand what is happening with you.”
“I’m still human enough to bleed,” I said, voice cracking. “I want a human doctor.”
Damien ran one hand through his wet hair and stood up, pacing once across the bathroom.
Then he stopped and looked at me. “Okay.”
I blinked. “Okay?”
He crouched in front of me again and took both my hands. “If you want a human doctor, we go to a human doctor.”

Chapter 113
My lips trembled. “You’re not going to argue?”
“I want to,” he said honestly. “But I heard you.”
I leaned forward and pressed my forehead to his. “I’m scared.”
“I know.” His fingers tightened around mine. “I am too hm?”

In the car, I sat with one hand over my belly, staring out the window while Damien drove. He kept glancing at me, his hand reaching over every few minutes to touch my thigh.
“Still cramping?” he asked.
“A little.” I swallowed and looked down at my stomach. “Can you feel anything?”
His hand left the wheel for a second and hovered over my belly. “May I?”
I nodded.
He placed his palm over the fabric, fingers spread wide. At first, nothing happened. Then his whole body went still.
“What?” I asked quickly. “What is it?”
His throat moved. “Heartbeat.”
My eyes widened. “You can feel it?”
He nodded, his eyes still on my belly. “Strong. Fast.” His voice got rough. “Our pup is still there.”
I covered his hand with mine and let out a breath that sounded almost like a sob. “Okay. Okay, good.”
The hospital was too bright and too clean, and I suddenly felt weird sitting there with Damien beside me like we were a normal couple.
The doctor was kind, middle aged, with glasses hanging from a chain around her neck.”How far along are you?” she asked.
I looked at Damien.
He looked at me.
I cleared my throat. “We’re not exactly sure.”
The doctor paused. “Not sure?”
“It’s complicated,” I muttered.
She did the scan. Cold gel touched my belly, and I grabbed Damien’s hand so fast his fingers closed around mine. The screen flickered. The doctor moved the probe slowly, then frowned.

Damien leaned forward. “What?”

The doctor did not answer right away. She adjusted the machine, eyes narrowing behind her glasses. “Well, I can see the baby.”
My grip on Damien tightened. “Is the baby okay?”
“The heartbeat is strong,” she said, then looked at the screen again. “But this is unusual.”
Damien’s shoulders went rigid. “Unusual how?”
The doctor turned the screen slightly. “The baby is measuring much bigger than expected. Honestly, this baby looks close to full term.”
I stared at her. “Full term?”
She nodded slowly. “I would normally expect someone this far along to be near delivery, or at least much further than you seem to believe.”
I sat there, mouth open, unable to speak. Damien’s hand tightened around mine, but he said nothing for a few seconds.
The doctor looked between us. “Have you had any previous scans?”
“No,” I whispered.
She wiped the probe and handed me tissues. “The bleeding may be from irritation or pressure, but with the size of the baby and your symptoms, I’d recommend close monitoring. Very close.”
Damien looked at me, and I already knew what he was going to say.
I shook my head. “No.”
“Sienna.”
“No, please.” I sat up too fast and winced. Damien caught my elbow. “Please don’t make me go back there.”
His face twisted. “The packhouse has the healer, guards, blood supplies, everything we may need.”
“I hate it there right now.”
“I know.” He crouched in front of me, one hand on my knee. “But if the baby is coming faster than we thought, I need you somewhere I can protect you.”
I looked away, tears slipping down my cheeks. “I just wanted one normal doctor visit.”
He wiped my face with his thumb. “I know.”
The doctor gave us papers, warnings, and a look that said she had no idea what to make of us. Damien folded everything neatly and helped me stand.

Chapter 113
In the car, I stared down at the scan picture in my lap. The baby looked real. Too real. Too soon.
Damien started the engine.
I closed my eyes. “We’re going back, aren’t we?”
He reached over and held my hand. “Yes.”
I nodded once, throat tight. “Then don’t let them take this from me.”
His voice went cold, steady, and sure. “They will have to go through me first.”
