Chapter 55
Dominic POV
This night was already trashed. I was in a bad mood far before my beta, Marcus, leaned in as I stepped out of the
car.
“By the way,” he whispered, straightening my jacket like a smug idiot, “Um…more bad news.”
I took in a breath, streathing my coat. “Marcus. You have given me nothing but bad news. You couldn’t catch Ellie. I’m here with “I pause. “Just, what is it?”
“I know, and for the record, she is fast and don’t bite my head off.” He grins.
“What?” My brow scrunches, “Why would I—”
“Ellie’s here with Lucas.”
I stopped mid-movement.
“What?” I snapped.
He nodded like it was common knowledge. “Yeah…Tyler saw them walk in together. Looked pretty cozy.”
Cozy.
I almost turned around and got back in the car.
“That’s wrong,” I muttered, jaw tightening. “She wouldn’t-She’s just doing it to piss me off.”
My Beta raised a brow. “So… she is here with him? Boss I don’t mean to push buttons but maybe she likes-”
I didn’t dignify that with an answer, just glare.
Vivian gets out the other side and slips her hand into mine, wearing that sugary-perfect smile. “Dom,” she said sweetly, “let’s go in. People are waiting.”
Right. The show must go on.
The ballroom doors swung open, trumpets blaring loud enough to crack glass. The usual nonsense hit me all at once-cheap disguised as vintage, too many smells, people fawning over my parents like they hung the moon.
Expected. Boring. Predictable.
Then, her.
Ellie.
I expected her-well, to not be here-but if she was, in a corner with a drink. Not in the middle of the dance floor looking…
She was in a midnight-blue dress catching every bit of golden light. Hair soft around her shoulders. Chin lifted high with challenge.
And Lucas-Lucas-had his hand on her waist.
My entire body went cold.
Then hot. Then cold again.

A pulse of something ugly shot through me-sharp and fast, like someone just drove a blade under my ribs. I knew they were here together.
But seeing it felt like a hot plate.
She’d been avoiding me again. Marcus too. Dodging us like I had some contagious disease.
But she could show up here looking like that, letting Lucas put hands on her
Like nothing happened between us? Like the bond meant nothing? Like I was nothing?
I tasted blood in my mouth from how hard I was clenching my teeth.
“Dominic?” Vivian whispered, tugging my arm. “Are you okay?”
No.
But I forced my expression flat.
“Fine,” I lied. “Just taking in the scene.”
If Ellie wanted to avoid me, fine. I could avoid her too. I could ignore her existence just as easily. Hell, maybe I’d do her one better and pretend I didn’t even know her name.
Two could play this stupid silent treatment game.
But-
My gaze drifted back to her.
She looked… happy.
Actually happy.
Smiling softly at whatever Lucas said. Fingers brushing his sleeve. Her dress shimmering as they turned on the dance floor. The room itself seemed to bend toward her, like she was the center without trying.
Something inside me twisted so violently I had to steady myself.
Rage flickered low in my gut, sharp as kindling catching flame.
Marcus glanced at me, eyebrows lifting. “Yo. Seriously. You good, man? You look like you’re gonna murder someone. Lighten up. It’s a party.”
I forced a breath through my nose. I was on the edge.
“This night,” I muttered, “is going to be a nightmare.”
Ellie POV
The second Dominic and Vivian made their slow, theatrical entrance-complete with trumpets, spotlights, and an ego big enough to blot out the moon-the entire ballroom shifted like someone rewrote gravity.
Whispers rose like a swarm of bees.
“Ellie’s here with Lucas.”

“Did you see Dominic’s face?”
“This is gonna be a disaster.”
Lucas squeezed my hand with a knowing smirk. “Ignore them. This will be fun.”
Fun. Sure. If you define “fun” as being roasted on the spit of public opinion.
I inhaled deeply, squared my shoulders, and tried – genuinely tried to focus on the music, on Lucas’s steady presence, on the fact that I had every right to be here.
