Chapter 318

“There’s a part of me that wants to give this marriage a chance,” I said quietly. “Even if it feels dangerous. Even if I’m terrified of what might happen. I think… I think I owe it to both of us to at least try.”
Something shifted in Dominic’s expression. The wariness that had been there since I walked in melted away, replaced by something softer. Relief, maybe. Or hope.
“Okay,” he said. “I’ll make it special. I promise.”
“You’d better,” I said. “Because if you screw this up, that’s it. No more chances.”
He smiled wryly. “Understood.”
I turned to leave, but he caught my hand.
“Ellie,” he said. “Thank you.”
I looked down at our joined hands, then back up at him. “Don’t thank me yet. You still have to prove yourself.”
“I will,” he said. “I’ll prove my loyalty to you. I swear it.”
I pulled my hand away and walked out of the room before I could change my mind.
Vivian’s POV
I was halfway down the stairs when I heard them talking in the sitting room.
I froze, one hand on the banister, and listened.
Ellie’s voice came through the door, muffled but clear enough to make out the words: “Make it magical. Plan something special.”
My stomach dropped.
I crept closer, pressing myself against the wall beside the door. Through the crack, I couldn’t see her face with her back turned to me, but I could see Dominic’s. He was smiling like she had just handed him the moon.
“I’ll make it special,” he said. “I promise.”
I bit down on my tongue.
They kept talking, something about chances and proving himself, and then Ellie left. I barely managed to duck out of sight before she came out, slipping into the shadows as she walked past and headed upstairs with slow, even steps.
Once she was gone, I stayed where I was, breathing hard.
The full moon. Dominic was planning some grand romantic gesture for Ellie on the full moon.
My hands curled into fists.
I had been so careful. So patient. After Colt rejected me, I’d made sure to milk every last ounce of sympathy out of Dominic. I spent hours lying in bed, clutching my chest, crying out in pain whenever I heard his footsteps nearby. I made sure he saw me struggling. Made sure he felt guilty for not being there enough.
And it had been working. He’d been coming to my room every day, checking on me, bringing me food, sitting with me whenever I asked him to.
But, just like always, he was running back to her. And now they were trying to repair their doomed marriage, despite all of my painstaking efforts to make sure that was impossible.

I pushed off the wall and started walking, my mind racing. I couldn’t let this happen. Dominic was supposed to be mine. He was always supposed to be mine.
But as long as Ellie was in the picture, that would never happen. The mate bond was too strong. It didn’t matter how much I suffered or how much I needed him. He would always choose her so long as that mark buzzed on her neck.
Unless I made sure he didn’t have a choice.
I stopped in the middle of the hallway, an idea forming.
The full moon was in two weeks. That gave me enough time… I just needed to be smart about my plans.
I turned and headed back upstairs, already thinking through the possibilities. Dominic wanted to prove his loyalty to Ellie? Fine. I’d make sure that night ended with her hating him more than ever.
And when it did, when she finally left him for good, I’d be there to pick up the pieces.
Just like I always was.
