Chapter 181

I had gotten a report back at work concerning some pack issues and ran back as fast as I could. A guard was stationed awaiting for me ready to tell what he had discovered.

The guard’s name was Damon. He worked the eastern

border station for three years, which was long enough that I listened when he brought something to me.

“Rogues,” he said. “Sightings near the Ashvale territory,

roughly fourteen kilometres from our eastern line. Three

confirmed, possibly more. They’ve been moving in a pattern that suggests they’re scouting rather than passing through.”

“Have they crossed?”

“Not yet, sir. But the movement is deliberate. We think they’re looking for a weak point.”

I looked at the map on the desk. Ashvale’s territory bordered ours in the northeast, a stretch of land that was historically the least monitored because it was the least trafficked.

“Double the patrols on the eastern line” I said “Tighten the

want reports every six hours until this is resolved.”

“Yes, sir.”

“And tell whoever’s rotating off that rotation is suspended until further notice. I want full coverage.”

Damon nodded and left.

I stood at the desk and looked at the map for a moment.

Rogues scouting a border meant either a coordinated incursion or a larger group nearby that these three were the

forward edge of. Neither was good.

My phone buzzed and I picked it up.

Sophie’s name was on the screen.

I’m at the hospital. Jenna attacked me. Getting stitches now. I don’t know what I did wrong, Kieran.

I looked at it.

My first thought was the car, the fastest route, how long

from here to the hospital. My feet moved before I decided to

move.

I stood in the middle of the office. I looked at the message again. I thought about Serena: the dinner table and the

thank you when I cooked, the elevator closing after her every morning, what I was trying to build and what it would cost to walk out of this building.

I put the phone face-down on the desk.

I didn’t reply.

I stood there with my hand on it for a moment. Then I slid it into my pocket and walked out.

Jenna was coming through the front entrance when I turned the corner, Trevor a step behind her. She was mid-sentence,

her hands moving. She looked up, saw my face, and stopped.

“Why did you attack Sophie?” I said.

Jenna stepped sideways and quickly behind Trevor.

Trevor looked between us and then laughed. “Jenna,” he said. “You’re a grown woman.”

“He looks like that,” Jenna said, from behind him.

Plooked at Trevor.

“Sophie interrupted a fight,” Trevor said. “That’s all. She got between two people already at it and caught something that wasn’t meant for her. Tell Sophie to stop putting herself in the middle of other people’s conflicts.”

“Who started it?” I asked.

“That is a longer answer.”

“Trevor.”

“Fiona came after Serena in a restaurant,” he said. “Jenna handled it. Sophie tried to break it up only to end up getting

hurt. That’s the full version.”

I looked at him.

“All I want,” I said, “is for everyone to be civil. I’m trying to make things easier with Serena and I still have a

responsibility to Sophie and Ethan. Those two things can exist

at the same time.”

Jenna came out from behind Trevor.

“A responsibility,” she said.

I looked at her and put a finger up. “Don’t.”

“Kieran.”

“Don’t,” I said. “Serena and I are working on things. We’re getting back on track. So stop bringing Sophie into

conversations about my marriage.”

Jenna looked at me.

Then she laughed. It came up from her chest and she didn’t

try to stop it.

“Kieran,” she said. “Serena doesn’t care about you.” Her voice was soft but it carried a confidence that tore at my heart.

“That’s not true,” I said, glaring at her.

“She told us,” Jenna said. “We had lunch with her today and she told us everything about how she felt about you, Sophie and the marriage.” She looked at me with her chin level. “She

said she’s accepted that you’re not hers to love anymore. She

said she doesn’t care. Those were her words. And I’m sure

she meant every one of them.”

“That’s not true,” I said shaking my head still.

“Trevor,” Jenna said.

Trevor exhaled. He crossed his arms.

“Andrew has made it known,” he said, “that he intends to

pursue her. He’s said it directly to me. He’s going after her.”

My hand closed around Trevor’s shirt.

Andrew will say and do anything just to piss me off. He had a srupid non functioning wolf and instead of searching for his mate, he intends to steal another’s.

“What did you just say to me?”

Trevor looked at my hand. He didn’t pull back.

“She doesn’t care about you,” he said. “I know that’s not what

you want to hear. But it’s the truth and you need to hear it from someone who isn’t going to soften it.” He held my gaze.

“She said you don’t stand up for her. She said she’s watched

your theatrics long enough to know what they are. She said

she’s playing along because right now she has no choice. But she’s done. She walked away from it a long time ago. You just won’t let her leave.”

Pret go of his arm and I stepped back.

chance and she was keeping to her words, yes she was still angry and throwing some tantrums but that was all what this

was, tantrum. She doesn’t hate me and was not just putting

up with me. She cared about me! She loved me.

My heart ached at this reality. Serena and I had been together for so long she could not just get tired of everything now, could she? We were married. She shouldn’t be giving up

so easily.

I didn’t speak. I didn’t move.

The hallway kept its sounds around me. I stood in the middle of it. My hands hung open at my sides.

Trevor came closer and stopped beside me.

“You know it’s true,” he said. “You’ve known it. I’ve watched

you know it and choose not to look at it.” He paused. “So why

are you still doing this? The dinners, the showing up. She’s

managed every gesture you’ve made and given you just

enough to keep you in place.” He looked at me. “Why won’t you let her go?”

“She’s not going anywhere,” I said. “Her blood is tied to mine. She is my wife. She is not going anywhere.”

“No,” Trevor said. “It’s a refusal. It’s you saying no because you can’t say the real thing.” He looked at me. “Why are you hesitating? Why won’t you give her the divorce? You could. You’ve always been able to.” He paused. “Is it possible that you love her?”

Cora went still in my chest.

I looked at the floor.

I didn’t answer.
