Chapter 250
Evelyn’s POV
This wasn’t how I initially intended for this conversation to go. Not really.
I was hoping that Kane and I could be civil while I tried to explain my reasoning for needing to leave the pack. It wasn’t going to be an easy conversation, but it needed to happen.
More so, I really hoped that he and I could have had this talk without a captive audience.
With all the patience I could muster, I turned toward Olivia. “Would you mind giving us a few moments to talk in private?”
Naturally, Olivia wasn’t keen on the idea of leaving. To hear that the Luna of the pack mentioned leaving was enough to capture her personal interest, no doubt.
She tried and failed to cover up her eager behavior. “I think, perhaps, it would be better if I stayed.”
Kane didn’t even allow the idea to linger for more than a second. “Olivia, leave.”
“But-”
“Now,” he snapped.
The woman went rigid and briskly left the office with her jaw clenched and her eyes narrowed.
As soon as the door slammed shut, Kane turned his head to face me and snarled. “Now, I’m going to ask my question again, and this time I’m going to try to remain as calm as possible.”
I glanced down at the broken remnants of the mug he’d crushed with his hands before.
“What do you mean ‘when you leave’?” he questioned tensely. “Since when the hell were you planning on leaving? For crying out loud, you just got back!”
“Kane,” I said softly. “This is what I’ve been meaning to talk to you about.”
I
He gave me an incredulous look as though I spat at him. It made my chest swell with an unspoken pain.
“While I was away, Cheryl and the other ladies brought something very important to my attention. Because I am the sole successor of my mother’s will, I believe that it’s time I take back what is rightfully
mine.”
I watched Kane slowly sink into one of the chairs across from me. His complexion grew pale. I wanted to reach out and keep him steady.
I let out a long breath. “It’s why I plan on meeting with the king. Now that things have pretty much cooled down in terms of public threats, I want to pursue what may be my own legacy. And it all starts by returning back to my home and dealing with my father and stepmother.”
“Evelyn,” he breathed. He dropped his face into his hands. “How could you be thinking about something

Kane was trying to regain some of his composure. He stood up from his chair and began to space the
room.
“What happens next then?” he asked. “Let’s say that you succeed in getting your mother’s pack to its formal standing. What then? You know that’s going to require you to stay here full time to make sure things remain in running operations. You do realize that.” 1
“Yes, I’m aware of that.”
A cloud of anger crosses over his eyes. The corner of his mouth pulled back into a bitter sneer.
“So you expect us to go on living two separate lives?”
I let out a humorless laugh and crossed my arms over my chest. “Well, it’s not as though we haven’t been doing that already.”
Kane stopped his excessive pacing and snapped his head to glare at me. His nostrils flared with growing anger.
“I’ve told you numerous times that nothing happened between me and Olivia,” he stated.
“Whether it did or it didn’t, it’s not going to change my mind on this, Kane.”
The corner of his eye twitched. “You’re letting this destroy what’s between us.”
His accusation stirred the creature within me, causing my Alpha to stand on the end. I stood up from my own chair and stood before him.
“Me? I’m not the one who openly allowed my ex back into this pack and fails to understand the concept of setting boundaries,” I fired back. “I told you this once, and I will say it again. I refuse to be in competition for my own husband’s attention. I’m not that desperate, nor am I that weak.”
Kane nearly closed the distance between us. He reached out to gently take my chin in his hand.
“And I told you, I am not giving you that divorce,” he said darkly.
“Then you’re only hurting yourself,” I told him weakly.
I pulled out of his grasp and headed toward the door.
