Chapter 251
Evelyn’s POV
There was more that needed to be said to Kane. However, the time had come for my meeting with the king, and I wasn’t going to postpone it for yet a second time.
My sleep the night before was once again broken and dissatisfying. I made sure to head to the bedroom to take a quick shower and dress accordingly.
Thankfully, Kane was already up and out of the room before I got here. I made sure to clear my work schedule with the rest of the medical team before heading toward the main doors.
Out of the corner of my eye, Henri spotted me and gave me a pointed look. One that was filled with lingering worry. I offered a small smile and calmly waved him off.
In our correspondence, the king had informed me of where he wished to meet. I wasn’t entirely familiar with the location, yet I gave the address to the driver nonetheless.
Twenty minutes passed before the car pulled over. I got out to find what appeared to be a family-owned
bistro.
This wasn’t exactly what I had been expecting. Knowing the king for his lavish tastes, I have half- anticipated him to have chosen some sort of exclusive lounge or a high-end restaurant.
The moment I stepped inside the place, I heard my name being called out from across the room. Turning my head, I saw the king with his arm raised high in the air, beckoning me over.
He’d secured a small table in the far corner of the place behind a makeshift privacy wall.
The older man graced me with a wide smile. “How are you, my dear?”
I couldn’t help but return the smile as I sat down. “A bit surprised that you’ve chosen this place for our meeting,” I pointed out.
The king shrugged. “I happen to be close friends with the owners,” he said. “Whenever I need to take a private meeting, I book a table here.”
There was something rather sweet about that notion.
But I quickly gathered my thoughts and focused on the task at hand.
“Well, the reason why I wanted to call this meeting was because I’ve found my mother’s hidden will.”
The king’s expression shifted within seconds. His mouth grew slack as his eyes slightly widened.” You’re serious?”
I nodded. “I am.” I bent down to reach into my bag, where I pulled out the papers to show him. “You wouldn’t believe how foolish I felt when I finally realized where my mother had secretly hidden them.”
I told him about the secret compartment in the jewelry box, making his stern exterior crack with

amusement.
“She always did have a flare for hidden rooms and spaces,” he mused.
I gave him a few minutes to read through everything in my mother’s will. In the meantime, one of the waitresses came over to drop off some water and to take our actual drink order.
By the time she returned with our two iced teas, the king had gotten through all of the documents and sat back in his chair. He looked as though he wasn’t sure where to begin.
“This changes things, Evelyn. As the rightful executor to your mother’s will, it’s been your literal birthright to resume where she left off,” he said sternly.
I found myself sagging back in my own seat. “If I had known this from the beginning, I would have never allowed my father to let things become so out of hand. He and my horrid stepmother have practically destroyed all the work my mother had done.”
The man sneered at the sound of me mentioning my father. “Your father always was a poor excuse for a man,” he snarled. “He never appreciated your mother the way that she deserved. And to think, he’s basically robbed his own daughter out of her own inheritance.”
