Chapter 254

Evelyn’s POV

My first, initial thought was to decline. I didn’t really need to share another dinner where Olivia and Kane would be fawning over each other.

No, thank you.

Kane must have caught my trepidation. A small smile pulled at the corners of his mouth as he came around the work table. I closed the books I’d been reading and slid off the stool.

He took my hands in and led me out of the lab and down the hallway. He said nothing, yet his smile never faded.

“Kane, I don’t-”

“Hush,” he said lightly. “Just trust me.”

We made it to the dining room, where I half-anticipated there to be three dinner settings on the table. But, much to my shock, there were only two place settings out.

I glanced over at Kane, whose smile kept growing. He pulled out of my chair for me and waited until I was promptly seated. As soon as he took his spot at the table, one of the kitchen staff members came out to fill our glasses and place down our salads.

It was rather strange for the two of us to be sharing in such an intimate setting given everything that’s been going on. As much as I wanted to bask in the familiarness, I couldn’t help but feel a bit skeptical.

I took a tentative sip of my water. “Okay, what brought this on?” I asked him.

Kane squared his shoulders. “I believe that I have come to realize multiple things while you were at your meeting earlier today,” he explained.

“Oh?”

He nodded. “First, I want to apologize.”

I nearly choked on a piece of lettuce that became caught in my throat. Had I heard him correctly?

“Apologize for what?”

Kane cast his gaze down to the table. This was something that he wasn’t accustomed to. Alphas as ruthless and unyielding as Kane weren’t ones to openly apologize.

“For my transgressions when it came to Olivia,” he acknowledged. “You were right. There was a part of me that couldn’t get over the past I had with her. When she and I were forced to end our relationship, I was certain that I would never be happy with anyone.”

He snaked his hand across the table to take my own.

“When the king came to me with this proposition of needing to marry, I couldn’t have been any less

enthusiastic.”

“Oh, believe me, I remember,” I said dryly.

Kane lightly chuckled. “You were the furthest type of woman I ever expected to be paired with. A young woman who had practically zero connection with her own wolf. Yet possessed the strongest will and resilience I have ever witnessed…It pains me that I didn’t see it sooner.”

My heart felt so heavy in my chest, my stomach proceeded to flip several times over.

“Kane,” I whispered.

“Olivia may have been my first love, but there is a reason why fate decided to pair the two of us together, Evelyn,” he said. “No matter what happens, I do not intend on letting what’s developed between us

become lost.” 1

I sucked in a sharp breath and fought back the excessive sting in the corners of my eyes. I didn’t want to cry. Not because I thought it would make me appear weak. But mainly because I knew I wouldn’t be able to stop once I started.

I clenched my eyes shut as I felt the gentle brush of his thumb over my knuckles.

“You must know that I am beyond proud of what you’ve accomplished so far and what you plan on working on in the future. I know you want to go back to your home and help regain what was lost by your father,” he said. “But you need to know that no matter how long it takes for you to get things back up and running, I am going to stand by your side. Even if that means I’m not physically able to do so.”
