Chapter 255

I sucked in a shaky breath. My entire mouth had gone dry; my throat was sore from the overwhelming

emotions.

Goddamnit! Why the hell couldn’t he have come out and told me this sooner??

My vision had become too blurry for me to see straight. I brought my other hand up to wipe the corners of my eyes.

“I hadn’t realized how much I needed to hear that,” I confessed weakly.

Kane leaned across the corner of the table and cupped my cheek. He pressed his lips to mine in a tender

kiss.

He pulled back and brushed a few locks of hair back from my face. “By the way, I’m planning on looking into Olivia’s background.”

My brows lifted in surprise. I tilted my head back to get a better look at him. “Wait, what?”

Kane nodded and settled back into his seat. “There’s been something really bothering me about when she first arrived here. When she was explaining what had happened to her husband, she hadn’t shown an ounce of remorse or sadness.”

Now granted, I wasn’t in the room at the time of this particular conversation; however, even I found that a

bit odd.

“That is rather strange,” I noted with furrowed brows. “Not that I’m trying to defend her, but could she have just been in shock?”

Kane shook his head. Of the two of us, he knew Olivia the best. Having nearly been married to her, he was the most familiar and aware of her behaviors and emotional reactions to certain things.

“Think about it, Evelyn. Olivia claims to have lost her literal ‘mate.’ That isn’t something that someone could simply recover from, especially not that quickly.”

I slowly nodded. “You have a point. At the time of her arrival, the battle had only been over less than two

weeks.”

I nearly lost Kane during that damn battle, and, deep down, I knew that there was nothing that would have been able to console me if things had ended badly.

A cold shiver raced down my spine. Gods, just the thought of it left me feeling desolate.

“Two weeks and you mean to tell me that she managed to get over the person fate had chosen for her? Who was supposed to be perfect for her in every way? I’m sorry, but I don’t buy it.”

A surge of compassion and giddiness flooded through me. I wanted to shout at the top of my lungs,’ Yes! Where the hell have you been?!’ I could hardly express how glad I was that he was finally seeing what I had noticed the whole time.

I knew there was something off about her this entire time, but it meant the world to me that Kane was willing to admit this. He had been Olivia’s number one supporter since the day she first arrived.

It was as though the clouds that were fogging his sense of judgment had finally dispersed.

“So, how do you intend on looking into this?” I asked.

“Right now, I have Henri looking through the list of casualties from the battle. I want to confirm that Olivia’s husband is in fact on it.”

“And if he’s not?” I prompted.

“Then she’s going to have a lot of explaining to do,” he said. “Now, tell me how your meeting went with his Royal Highness.”

I couldn’t help but giggle. “It went surprisingly well. I showed him my mother’s will and told him my plans. He’s allowed me the time that I need to help get my mother’s work back in order.”

“That’s great,” he said supportively. “When do you expect to head there? A couple of days? Maybe next

week?”

My heart suddenly dropped to my gut. “Kane, I… The king has me set to leave tomorrow morning.”
