Chapter 256
Evelyn’s POV
I had gone to sleep that night tucked closely against Kane’s side. I was glad to be back in our room, having spent so many restless nights apart.
However, there was no denying the painful ache that settled in my chest the moment I told him what my plans were.
I watched all the blood drain from his face. “You’re leaving tomorrow?”
I silently nodded my head, not knowing how I could possibly better the situation. Had I known that Kane was going to go all heartfelt and finally show signs of genuine clarity, I would have booked this trip down to a later date.
But no. Because I was under the impression that our relationship was beyond the point of salvaging, I had agreed to the king’s departure without a second thought.
And I couldn’t very well reschedule this. It was far too important to me that this get accomplished. I was already dreading the confrontation I was bound to have with my father and stepfamily.
But I couldn’t get Kane’s look of devastation out of my head. My heart ached, knowing that there was nothing that I could do to ease this horrible apprehension between us.
Kane took a moment to reassess the situation before slowly nodding. “Okay. I’m not going to tell you to reschedule or not go. I just wished there was a little more time,” he said.
“Goddamnit,” I hissed under my breath.
“It’s alright,” he assured me.
It didn’t feel ‘alright.’ But neither of us had much of a choice.
As soon as we finished dinner, Kane and I headed back to our room. The two of us got ready for bed and slipped beneath the sheets. He wasted no time pulling me close to his side, where I proceeded to fight back a second round of tears.
I couldn’t fathom how much I missed this feeling. Being close to him like this healed the part of me that had been hurting. And to think, I was about to leave for an unknown period of time.
That bitterness burned in the back of my throat. Unfortunately, I was too tired to stay awake for much longer. I closed my eyes, and before I knew it, the sun was streaming through the windows.
Kane’s arms never left my waist. His face was buried in my neck. As soon as he felt my body shift, his hold on me tightened.
“Five more minutes,” he muttered, his voice low and raspy.
My bottom lip trembled as I smiled. “I’m afraid that I have to get up and start packing my bag,” I said

The two of us moved at a snail’s pace, not wanting to rush anything more than was necessary. When I finished with my bags, Kane had a few of the maids move my stuff to the front hallways.
From there, the two of us headed down to the medical ward. I spotted Diana and Josie and told them what was going on.
Diana looked as though she were seconds away from having a full-blown panic attack.
“Wait, you’re leaving? For how long?” she asked.
“I’m not sure. But, I promise to stay in touch as often as I can,” I told them.
“What if I come with you?” she offered.
My heart swelled from the thought. “As much as I would love that, your place is here. The medical ward needs you as does the rest of the team.”
I hugged both her and Josie.
“Diana, I’m putting you in charge of looking after Michael and keeping an eye on the rest of the restricted section,” I told her. “You are to call me immediately if anything is to happen. I don’t care how insignificant the situation may be. Call me.”
“I understand.”
From there, Kane and I headed toward my lab, where I intended to take all of my personal work journals as well as the journal from the rogue campsite with me.
