There was no chance that I was going to let this journal remain here while I was away.
As Kane and I headed back toward his office, Henri caught his attention momentarily. While I was waiting for the two of them to finish speaking, I caught something out of the corner of my eye.
Olivia was looming at the corner of the hallway. She failed to hide her smirk, knowing that I would soon be gone. “Don’t worry about Kane,” she told me. “I’ll make sure that he’s well taken care of.”
I didn’t overlook the smug tone in her voice. I turned to face her directly and kept my own voice as calm and even as possible.
“Try not to choke on the fertility enhancer you swiped from my lab,” I chuckled.
Olivia’s expression turned startled as she quickly scurried away without another fighting word.
Kane returned to my side and curled his arm around my waist. “Henri just informed me that the car had arrived for you,” he said.
There was something heavy in his words. I turned to face him and wrapped my arms around his middle. I felt like a child not wanting to let go of their guardian. Silly, yet terribly vulnerable.
Less than twenty-four hours ago, I couldn’t wait to pack up things and leave. There was so much work that needed to be done, there was no chance I could put it off any longer. But now, I didn’t want to leave.
Kane’s heartfelt words last night hit so many nerves, reminding me why I had grown to care for him so deeply in the first place. It hadn’t fully mended the issue between us, but it sure as hell was a good start.
I felt his strong arms wrap around me, holding me tight. “How long?” he asked.
“I don’t know.” I took my bottom lip between my teeth. “It’s been a long time since I was back at that house. I’m merely hoping that when I get there, the place isn’t crumbling to the ground.”
“Please. Please be careful.” My heart hammered painfully in my chest.
“The king is not only giving me an escort but will also be ensuring that my so-called ‘family’ are removed from the property immediately,” I told him.
Kane leaned back and took my chin in his hand. My eyes were locked on the rug, not willing to budge. Because if I did, I knew I was going to break out in tears.
“Look at me,” he said softly.
With all of the inner strength I had, I glanced up at him. All the air stilled in my lungs.
“This isn’t a ‘goodbye’, okay?” he assured me. “This is simply a temporary break away.”
I nodded my head but found that it was suddenly hard to breathe. Kane leaned down to capture my lips in a promising kiss. I clutched his shirt tightly in my hands and regretted letting it go a moment later.

“I promise to stay in touch as often as I can,” I said weakly.
Perhaps it was just a trick of the lightning, but I could have sworn that I saw tears in the corners of Kane’s eyes.
Goddess, why was this so difficult?
I gave him one last lingering look before heading toward the main doors. My bags had already been collected. All that was left was for me to leave.
I took in a tremulous breath and slipped through the doors and made my way to the car. I signaled for the driver to go on. This time, as I watched the house grow smaller in the distance, I felt an entirely new
kind of sorrow.
