My eyes dropped to his hands to find them shaking. I carefully approached him and led him back over to the bed, where I insisted he lay back down.

“It’s okay. Tell me what happened,” I said.

“It was only an hour ago. It was quiet; everyone had finished their last shifts and gone to their rooms. Most of the lights were off, so I couldn’t exactly see who was moving out in the hallway,” he explained.” Suddenly, the door handle began to shake. Whoever it was, they were strong. I thought the door was going to snap off of its hinges.”

I felt terrible. I gently shook my head. “Michael, I’m so sorry.”

“It’s not your fault,” he said.

The corners of my eyes filled with tears that I refused to let fall. I was so ashamed.

No, but I was the one who was solely responsible for the lives in this section of the medical ward. And I just upped and left. What the hell kind of a person was I?

“Diana,” I called out. “Can you come in here?”

I needed another person’s opinion. It was imperative that I figure out this attacker’s thought process.

Diana came into the room and silently checked over Michael.

“Evelyn, you mentioned before that someone had tried to get to him. So, this would make it the second time,” Diana pointed out.

“Yes,” I confirmed.

“But why him?” she asked aloud.

“I’m sure it has something to do with the fact that I’m a rogue,” Michael commented.

“Yes and no,” I said. The two of them looked at me. “I can understand your reasoning; rogues aren’t exactly publicly liked. But if that was the sole reason then Kane would have never allowed for you and the others to remain here in the first place.”

I went over to lean against the wall. “I think it’s something much worse. Kane and I shared a theory. Michael, I don’t mean to alarm you, really. But we think that whoever it is may be the one responsible for administering those Wolfsbane injections.”

His eyes grew wide.

“You’re saying that whoever’s behind this believes that Michael would be able to identify them, so they’re looking to…Silence him?”

I slowly nodded. “Either that or they could be trying to inject them again in order to control them.”

“Not a fucking chance!” Michael hissed.

For what it was worth, I was glad to see that he was apprehensive over the idea of being controlled again.

“Look, I’m not leaving this house until I come up with a plan,” I told him.

I refused to place Michael or any of the others in another compromising position. The last two times, we were fortunate that whoever it was wasn’t able to get to Michael. But when was that luck going to run

out?

“I’m going to have two guards posted outside of this room, okay?” Michael nodded. “Try and get some rest.”

Diana and I slipped out of the room and securely locked the door behind us. My heart felt heavy in my

chest.

“Oh, I know that look,” Diana said, nudging my shoulder. “It’s not your fault, Evelyn.”

“I feel like it is,” I said. “I should have been here. In the back of my mind, I knew that there was a possible chance that something like this could have happened again, and now look.”

Diana rested her hand on my shoulder and gave a light squeeze. “We just need to be thankful that nothing did happen.”

A figure drew my attention out of the corner of my eye. Standing at the far end of the hallway was Kane.
