“Fuck me,” I whispered. I didn’t plan to say it. The unfiltered demand just fell out of my mouth.

Fenris froze. His jaw tightened so hard a muscle jumped in his cheek. The thick cords in his neck strained. He looked down into my eyes, his grey irises dark and blown wide. He was fighting it. The sexual tension was a physical weight pressing against us from all sides.

“Taya fights for pride,” he said, his voice turning rough and ragged. He ignored my demand, keeping his hand flat against my ribs. “She fights because she wants to prove she is better than you. She wants the crowd to cheer.”

He dropped his hand. The sudden loss of contact made my skin cold.

“You fight to survive,” he continued, taking a slow step back. “You fight because you want to live. That makes you more dangerous. Do not forget that tomorrow.”

The distance between us felt like a physical punishment. I stood there, my chest heaving, my shirt still bunched in my hands.

“Sleep, Sera,” he said.

He turned, walked to the door, and pulled it open. He stepped out and closed it behind him without looking back.

I dropped my shirt. I was shaking again, but not from the healing. I was aching. I was extremely wet. I was furious.

I walked to the bed and crawled under the heavy furs. I didn’t sleep for a long time. I stared at the dark ceiling. I visualized Taya. I visualized her dropping her massive shoulder. I visualized the strike. I visualized breaking her.

The sun rose. The light filtering through the window was pale and icy grey.

Mina came in. She didn’t speak. She helped me dress in simple, tight black leather pants and a sleeveless tunic that wouldn’t catch on anything. I laced my boots tight.

I walked out of my room. Mina walked beside me. The corridors were completely empty. Everyone was already outside.

We reached the heavy wooden doors at the entrance. The guards pushed them open.

The biting cold air hit my face. I stepped out into the yard.

The entire pack was there. Hundreds of northern wolves stood in a massive, deep circle around the packed dirt of the training area. Their breath plumed in the freezing air. It was incredibly loud. The noise was a dull, continuous roar of aggressive conversations and exchanged bets. The air smelled intensely of unwashed bodies, wet fur, hot breath, and dry dirt.

I walked into the center of the ring. The frost crunched loudly under my boots.

Taya was already there. She wore dark, fitted fighting leathers. Her nose was completely straight, fully healed. She looked huge. Her arms were thick with dense muscle. She smiled when she saw me. It was a cruel, confident, bloody smile.

Fenris stood at the very edge of the circle. He wore a long, heavy fur cloak that made him look like a mountain. Yvara stood beside him, her arms crossed. Kael stood on the opposite side, glaring at me with

unfiltered hatred.

I stopped ten feet away from Taya.

I kept my eyes on her shoulders. I kept my weight centered, my knees slightly bent. I breathed in the freezing air and found the knot of heat in my stomach.

Fenris raised his hand.

The crowd went completely silent.

He dropped his hand.

“Begin.”
