“Don’t misunderstand, Zoey.” At the sight of me looking down, Mike added sincerely, “You’re a strong and loving person. We don’t reject outsiders here. As long as you want to, you can live with us.”
I patted the sleeping pup and nodded.
Over the next few days, I stayed with the Night Wind pack to rest and heal.
Mike showed great concern toward me and the pup. Not only did he give me a stone hut, but he also taught me how to use his pack’s medicinal herbs and tools.
He never asked me about my past. Instead, whenever I occasionally stared into the distance with a far–off look, he would hand me some roasted meat or a bowl of warm water.
The pup also slowly recovered. Whenever he saw Mike, he ran after him and nuzzled against his leg.
This domestic, calm, and beautiful life was something I had never experienced in my former pack.
As time passed, thoughts about Jacob and my life with him slowly faded away.
But Jacob missed Zoey dearly.
