Chapter 66

After the meeting, Matilda found that half of the office building was empty.

She asked and found out that Rufus had been there.

The old man, who usually smiled, used ruthless measures to fire all the employees who spread the video and slandered her behind her back.

A notice was also issued on Horton Group’s official website.

[Ms. Thea Wiley’s behavior seriously violates Article 1.01b of the company’s Employee Handbook. The company is firing her. It’s effective immediately, and the company will never rehire her.]

Horton Group’s official website was the focus of attention for state media.

Posting the work badge and work photo for dismissal was equivalent to an industry ban.

The remaining employees were so scared that they wanted to seal their mouths.

They thought, ‘Is Matilda the adopted daughter of Mr. Keller?

‘No, she must be the boss of Mr. Keller.

‘No one can talk about her. It’s a crime to say anything!’

After hearing the whole story, Matilda speculated that it might have been Martin who instructed Rufus to do this.

As with today’s events, Martin couldn’t rush to the police station to protect every Horton Group executive who was in trouble.

She couldn’t help but think of the gossip that Rufus had told her before.

He said, “Horton Group’s big boss fell in love with the wife of Crossen Technology’s CEO.”

She thought, ‘Could the CEO’s wife really be me?’

At the thought of Horton Group’s big boss being called “sir”, she thought of an old man with age spots all over his face and hands, leaning on a cane, and hunched over.

Matilda couldn’t help but shiver.

After work, while waiting for her ride on the side of the road, Matilda opened the Vansen Restaurant’s app to order food.

Tessa loved to eat at this restaurant.

She wanted to ask Tessa to come along.

Just as she was about to call Tessa, her call came in.

They had always been in sync.

Matilda said happily, “Tessa, I was just about to…”

Tessa cut her off, “Matilda…”

Tessa’s voice was nasal. Obviously, she had been crying.

The smile at the corner of Matilda’s mouth faded, and she became nervous.

She asked worriedly, “What’s wrong? Did Zack bully you?”

Tessa sobbed. “It’s not that he’s bullying me. But he, Brandon, and the others ganged up on you.

“This afternoon, Zack returned home, and Larry came along. They looked awful and kept snapping at the servants.

“I felt it might be related to you, so I opened the study door to eavesdrop. Brandon is just a bastard. I should have been there for you yesterday.”

Tessa’s voice choked, and she broke down as she spoke.

“Yesterday was the last day of your cooling-off period. I wanted to go to Maple Heights to find you, but Zack didn’t let me

out.

“Does he think that if he doesn’t let me out, I won’t go out? It’s not like I don’t have legs. If I had been with you, Brandon wouldn’t have had a chance.

“I won’t listen to Zack anymore. If he doesn’t go back with me to see Grandpa, I’ll go alone. If Grandpa asks, I’ll say I’m divorced, too.”

Matilda called Tessa’s name twice before Tessa calmed down a little.

“Tessa, I’m really okay. Don’t provoke Zack, lest you get into trouble.”

Tessa said firmly, “I’m not afraid.”

“But I am afraid!” What Matilda said was true.

She was afraid that she hadn’t cleaned up the mess yet, and Tessa would fall into the mire again.

Then Brandon and Zack, holding their women, would laugh at how ignorant they were.

Tessa sniffed, “Okay, I’ll do as you say. Don’t worry about me.”

Matilda hung up the phone, adjusted her mood, ordered food, and bought some fresh juice before heading home.

She was feeling a little down and needed Jolene, her little ray of sunshine, to warm her up.

When the doorbell rang, Matilda put down her phone and hurried to open the door.

But in the video intercom, only Allen was there.

Allen was holding a bouquet.

It wasn’t exactly a bouquet. To be precise, it was a single stem.

It was a classic black-hearted sunflower, with a large, bright yellow head, surrounded by two layers of large white flowers.

Matilda smiled involuntarily and said politely, “Oh, you shouldn’t have.”

Allen smiled and said, “Isn’t it what a gentleman should do?”

Matilda teased, “Why did you bring a single flower instead of a bouquet, Dr. Saunders?”

Allen smiled. “Because I am shortsighted and can only take one flower.”

‘And only one person…’

Allen didn’t say it, but handed the flower to Matilda.

Matilda didn’t know how beautiful her smile was when she took the flower.

It was joy, the smile reaching to the tips of her eyebrows.

That smile cast into Allen’s sharp and deep eyes.

There was a hint of shyness, charm, and intoxication in them.

“Thank you. But, where is Jolene?” Matilda asked Allen, who was lost in a wonderful dream.

Allen came back to his senses and realized that his heart was beating a little faster at that moment, and there was a feeling of numbness.

His eyes moved away from Matilda’s face, and his Adam’s apple rolled as he said, “Upstairs. She doesn’t want to come down.”

When Jolene was abroad, she was cheerful and lively.

After returning to the country, she didn’t seem to be as happy.

“Didn’t you tell her that I ordered her favorite blueberry pancakes?”

Of course, Matilda knew that if she changed her words to “I made her favorite blueberry pancakes myself”, the effect would be better.

She couldn’t do that.

But she had a way with children.

In the past, to educate herself, Lola attended various parenting classes led by experts.

But Lola was immune to both soft and hard approaches.

And she could use them to coax Jolene.

Matilda put the flower in the hallway and said, “I’ll invite her in person.”

Jolene was staring blankly at the children’s camera and fingerprint ring.

Hearing the doorbell ring, she was startled and picked them up, running to her room.

But Matilda’s voice came through the video call.

“Jolene, I haven’t properly thanked you for asking your father to save me last time.

“I want to thank you properly today. Are you really not coming?”

Jolene missed the joy of dining with her father and Matilda and hesitated a little.

Matilda listened, but there was no movement inside.

She wanted to sing Dear Little Bunny and coaxed Jolene to open the door.

But she couldn’t make cute expressions.

She felt more like the wolf in disguise.

So, she decided to focus on the man next to her.

“How about you sing Dear Little Bunny?”

“Me?” Allen raised his eyebrows in surprise.

His slender fingers adjusted his glasses. “Um, I’m not so good at it, either.”

Matilda told herself, ‘Okay.

‘Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself!’

Matilda sighed slightly.

Her brow furrowed again and again, as if making a difficult decision.

She looked at the man next to her again.

“How about we sing together?”
