She yelled at the group of parents, “You’re not allowed to talk about Matilda! She only agreed to be my godmother because she couldn’t bear to see me being a bastard.
“You don’t even know her, so why are you judging her? Just because you’re adults, does that give you the right?”
Jolene said, then turned her anger towards Lola.
“My father wouldn’t hit your father for no reason. Besides, is your father someone anyone can hit?
“If it wasn’t your father’s fault, why would the police have released my father? Do you think my father can get the police to be more polite than your father can?”
“Also, don’t you call Aunt Shelby ‘Mom’? Now you’re saying you want Matilda to come home. What kind of family has two mothers?”
Lola couldn’t respond and suddenly lost control of her facial expressions.
She looked pitiful just moments ago, and then she had puffed-up cheeks.
Matilda listened to Jolene’s words, her heart swelling with emotion, sometimes fast, sometimes slow.
Yesterday, she was still guiding Jolene because Jolene only warmed people like the sun, but would not fight back when being bullied.
She never thought that Jolene’s enlightenment would be so thorough.
For her godmother, Jolene showed more courage than a soldier charging on the battlefield.
Matilda thought, ‘How much maternal love must she desire to regard me, whom others despise like mud, as a treasure.’
Matilda’s gaze fell on Lola again.
People said one’s heart was dead when they were too disappointed.
As for how that felt, her biological daughter had made her experience it too many times.
With this comparison, Matilda would treasure more about Jolene.
Matilda couldn’t maintain much composure.
She picked up Jolene and kissed her hard.
The parents who had been gossiping about Matilda the most fiercely still had some sense of shame.
After being lectured by a five-year-old child, they couldn’t be more embarrassed.
But they couldn’t bring themselves to argue with a child.
It would make them look like they were bullying the weak.
As they were about to disperse, they saw Shelby and Kathy squeezing in through the door.

They felt that they could bear the embarrassment and watch a little longer.
Lola was in a helpless and isolated situation.
When she saw Shelby and Kathy, it was like seeing relatives she had been separated from for many years.
She threw herself into Shelby’s arms, sobbing.
Shelby held Lola in one arm and stroked the back of Lola’s head with the other.

She comforted Lola softly, “Sweetie, don’t cry. Grandma and I are here. Let’s talk nicely. If we make a mistake, we can apologize and correct it, right?”
“Now, you put Lola down and apologize to Jolene and Robin,” Matilda said.
She looked at Shelby with disgust.
“Ms. Webster, you can start after comforting your daughter.”
Shelby was surprised.
She thought to herself, ‘Is Matilda out of her mind? She even called Lola my daughter?’
‘Does she really not care about Lola anymore?’
Matilda hugged Jolene and waited for Lola to apologize, glancing at the door.
She glimpsed Allen, blocked by the crowd and unable to enter.
He didn’t seem to be in a hurry to come in.
His brows were slightly furrowed, his eyes like torches, carefully observing every face.
The silver-rimmed glasses on his nose shimmered with a cold, metallic luster.
Kathy opened her mouth to scold Matilda. “You little bitch…”
“Shut up,” Matilda shouted.
Kathy shivered reflexively,
She was almost strangled to death by Matilda the day before, and she was scared of Matilda in her bones.
Shelby began, “Matilda, you…”
Matilda cut her off sharply, “You shut up, too!”
Gillian wanted to mediate. She parted her lips but was afraid that Matilda would yell at her to shut up, so she quietly closed her mouth again.
Matilda said, “I watched Lola grow to five years old, and I know her temperament best.
“Today, her attitude towards me improved, and then she innocently blamed me, drawing the fault away from herself. I know this trick well, just like you, Shelby.”
Shelby’s eyes revealed deep confusion and grievance.

“It’s okay for children to make mistakes, just correct them. Why are you being so hurtful, Matilda? If you think I can’t properly guide Lola, whom you gave birth to, you can tell Brandon.”
Kathy chimed in. “While you are being this bastard girl’s godmother, Shelby is taking care of Lola for you. She’s done so much. How dare you say that about her?”
There was another voice in the crowd.
“What kind of person is Matilda? Shelby is wholeheartedly good to her daughter, and she is biting the hand that feeds her!”
“Shameless! She’s still holding her lover’s child in her arms.”
“Where is Jolene’s father? Yesterday, he said he would have their backs. Why isn’t he even here today?”
“You guys have blocked the way. I can’t possibly turn into a butterfly and fly in, can I?”
Allen suddenly spoke, his voice containing a hint of a smile.
It was as gentle as catching up with an old friend.
But when everyone looked at him, they all saw mockery in his eyes.
The crowd stood to both sides, making way.
Allen’s lips curved upwards without emotion.
He walked in, met Matilda’s eyes, which were like a morning with a light mist.
Her gaze was not straightforward, not fervent, but very gentle and peaceful.
They didn’t exchange a word.
He reached out his hand, and Matilda handed Jolene to him.
Allen looked back at the crowd again with a gentle, smiling, and calm expression.
“Who are Matilda and I to you people? Why do you care so much about us?
“If you’re so idle, why not listen to a story from me?
“I have been practicing medicine for decades and have saved countless people. Among them are priests and fortune tellers.
“They say those who are kind to me will be blessed by God, and those who are hostile to me will be punished by heaven. Whether it is true or false, you will know in three days.”
Everyone turned pale and left as quickly as they could.
Matilda really wanted to jump and applaud.
She thought, ‘Dr. Saunders’s eloquence is really something else, leaving people speechless.
Her eyes turned to Kathy and said, “Dr. Saunders, Mrs. Grimes has the most malice towards you. If she needs another craniotomy, will you still save her yourself?”
Allen’s tone was elegant and indifferent.

“Then you have to tell her to take care of herself. I’m still angry, and it won’t be easy to calm down so quickly.”
