Chapter 81

Allen liked to hear these words.

He felt happy and satisfied to be valuable to Matilda. “Happy to help.”

Smile lines appeared clearly at the corners of Allen’s eyes.

He walked in, slipping easily into his own slippers.

He bought these slippers and placed them here himself, and Matilda hadn’t thrown them away.

Matilda stiffly held her neck as she took the wine from him and set it by the entryway. Allen noticed something unusual

about her.

Her hair fell loosely over her shoulders, which should have been lazy and casual, but she seemed to be restrained.

He asked, “Are you feeling unwell?”

Matilda instinctively nodded, and the tug pulled at her scalp. The pain twisted her features.

She said, “My hair is stuck in the zipper…”

“Let me see.” Allen put his hands on Matilda’s shoulders to turn her body around for examination.

Matilda said, “What I mean is, I want to borrow your scissors.”

His hands, resting on her shoulders, slowly withdrew.

A flicker of something unidentifiable flashed in the depths of his dark eyes.

He said, “I can’t remember where I left my scissors. Finding them might take some effort.”

Matilda added, “It’s okay. I’ll just use the kitchen knife at home.”

Allen added, “Wouldn’t it be even more troublesome if you accidentally hurt your neck again?”

“Dr. Saunders, is there an easier way?” Matilda asked, raising her eyebrows slightly.

Allen smiled faintly. “Turn around, and I’ll pull your hair out. It will only take two seconds.”

Matilda considered whether this was appropriate. Logically, it wasn’t like they lived in feudal times.

Backless dresses, crop tops, and bikinis were everywhere.

Asking Allen to help her with the zipper on her back revealed less than some people’s cleavage.

As long as they didn’t overthink it, there was nothing to worry about.

“Sorry to trouble you,” Matilda said politely,

After being up for a day, her fragrant hair turned richer.

As she turned, the fragrance wafted up like a gentle breeze, lingering around Allen’s nose.

Allen couldn’t help but take a deep breath, and the fragrance invaded his lungs.

To keep it for a moment longer, Allen held his breath, exhaling slowly after a long while…

Matilda kept her eyes fixed on their shadows cast on the carpet, as if watching a mirror.

She saw Allen’s hand first grip the dress, lifting it slightly to relieve the pull on her scalp.

Then he carefully teased out the strands of hair, one by one.

After all, Allen was a surgeon. He had patience.

What he said would take two seconds still hadn’t finished after two minutes, yet he remained calm and steady.

“Does it hurt?” he asked.

Matilda replied, “It doesn’t hurt.”

Not only did it not hurt, it tickled a little. Her heart felt ticklish too.

Allen probably didn’t realize, but his breath was like a small humidifier misting against the nape of her neck.

If there were fine hairs there, they’d be covered with tiny droplets.

It made the back of her neck itchy, and her heart was itchy too. She was just hoping Allen could finish quickly so she could

scratch it.

Matilda said, “Dr. Saunders, I really don’t feel any pain. You can be a little rougher and faster.”

She saw Allen’s shadow freeze for a moment. His pause also made Matilda pause.

She thought, ‘No pain? Rougher? Faster? Did he misunderstand?’

Afterwards, Allen did not leave immediately.

Instead, he asked Matilda to try the wine brewed by his adoptive father.

Matilda didn’t want to spoil his fun.

Without even changing out of her dress, she tied her hair into a ponytail with a hair tie and had two drinks with him.

Slightly tipsy, Matilda delicately mentioned that she had to go to work tomorrow.

Allen understood her meaning, that she wanted him to leave.

He smiled, shamelessly asking, “Where’s my reward?”

Matilda almost forgot and got up to get it for Allen.

Allen’s eyes followed Matilda closely.

She looked beautiful in that dress. Every gesture carried a unique charm.

He thought, I should buy her more, let her wear them often…

Matilda gave him two small potted plants.

One was a pine, hoping he could “relax.”

The other was mint, not symbolic, just for his desk to ward off mosquitoes.

They weren’t worth much, but Allen held them like treasures, fully content.

Lola couldn’t sleep and wanted company. But her father hadn’t come home yet, and Tully had taken leave.

She had no choice but to go find Shelby.

Lola searched all the rooms but didn’t find her. So she left the main building, heading toward the piano room in the annex.

It sounded like someone was talking in the garden.

Lola recognized Shelby’s voice. She tiptoed over and hid behind a pillar.

She wanted to wait for Shelby to finish talking to the plumber and then scare her…

Shelby gave the plumber some money and said patiently, “This money is enough to last you a long while. Take it and leave

here.”

After saying that, Shelby looked around warily.

Tully and Brandon were not home, and she had sent the servants to the annex. There were no cameras here, so no one would notice.

The plumber still refused, stubbornly saying, “I want to make a living with my own skills. Why do you keep trying to drive me away, Ms. Webster? Afraid the photos will be exposed?”

Shelby said, “I never told you to take any photos.”

Lola peeked her head out from behind the pillar, seeing Shelby unhappy for the first time. There was a fierce light in her

eyes.

The plumber said, “Do you want me to spell it out? You had me cut off the water and electricity at Matilda’s place, forcing her to go to Allen’s house to bathe. And you had me take pictures…”

“I’ll give you another 30 thousand dollars, alright?” Shelby’s tone softened again.

She felt unlucky meeting someone so stubborn, someone who didn’t love money.

She had tried many times to drive him away but failed.

With the plumber hanging around under Tully’s and Brandon’s noses was like a ticking time bomb…

Behind the pillar, Lola couldn’t understand everything.

She only remembered one sentence. Her mother went to Jolene’s father’s place to take a bath and even took pictures…

Lola thought, “That’s too much! How could Mom go bathe at Jolene’s dad’s place?’

She believed her dad definitely didn’t know. She decided to call him.
